SUPPORTING THE NOMINATION OF THE FREEDOM TOWER TO THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF "SUPPORTIVE HISTORIC 'PLACES AND REQUESTING THECITY MANAGER TO ASSIST CONCERNED CITIZENS TO PRESERVE THIS DOCU 1'.1 ENTS HISTORIC LANDMARK FOLLOW" WHEREAS, Metropolitan Dade County, Department of Parks and Recrea- tion, Historic Survey Division, has filed an application with the State of Florida,: Department of State, Division of Archives, History and Records Management requesting that the Freedom Tower, located at 600`. Ownershipof -the Freedom Tower is currently in litigation. Studies have been conducted regarding the economic feasibility of restoring the building,with conflicting conclusions. As far as I know, there has not been a thorough structural analysis of the building. Listing on. the National Register of Historic Places restorecould ldthe makeuit economicalspecial feasible for a private developer to purchase and tax benefits and loans would be available. The National Park Service of the Depart- ment of Interior states that the National Register: Is an authoritative guide to be used by Federal, State and local governments, private groups, and citizens to identify the Nation's culturalresources and to indicate what propertieS should be considered for protection from destruction or impairment. Was designed to be and is administered as a planning tool without restraint upon private property .interests. As you know, the property is now being considered by the State Review Board. Your efforts in initiating such a resolution will weigh heavily on the State Review Board's recommendation.
