The United Nations General Assembly declared 1979 to be "The International. Year.
of the Child:" It took this action in hopes of stimulating, all countries, rich
or poor, to examine the conditions of :their children and_ committhemselves:'to
long-term measures to imporve the lives of children.
The focus and goals`of "The International Year of the Child" should not be
understood as only finding solutions to grim problems and compiling unhappy
statistics. It is a time to celebrate childhood in all its wondrous beauty;
highlighting the achievements. of children and their incredible accomplishments
while stressing all the positive things that are happening among our children.
With With' that specific >goal in mind, we ask you, Mr. Mayor and members of the Commis-
sion, to please designate October:15, 1979 through. October 20th as the city of
Miami's and .U.A.C.'s` "International `Year 'of the Child Festival Week."
We shall he able to use this holiday designation in our press releases which will
help us get even greater -exposure and awareness.. With the city's help, coupled
with our excellently planned program, we hope to have a very successful and reward-
ing event.
We are offering the city of Miami the opportunity to co-sponsor the festival.:.
The ground work has: been done. Governor and Mrs. Graham will lead the "Parade
