FOR THE PURPOSES OF CONDUCTING THE GREAT COCONUT GROVE BICYCLE RACE AND PROVIDING THE NECESSARY POLICE SERVICES BY THE CITY OF MIAMI POLICE DEPARTMENT IN CONJUNCTION THEREWITH; HELD ON OCTOBER 10, 11, 12, 13 AND 14, 1979. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The action of the City Manager in executing the attached agreement with the non --profit organization known as the Cocontit Grove Bicycle Club, Inc. for the purposes of conducting the GREAT COCONUT GROVE BICYCLE RACE and providing the necessary Police services by the City of Miami Police Department in conjunction therewith, held on October -10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, 1979, is hereby ratified and approved. The proposed additional race would be a "Coconut to Miami Beach and Back" circuit. The proposed course is: Bayshore Drive North to U.S.1 U.S. 1 North to McArthur Cuaseway; McArthur Causeway East to the Alton Road overpass West Ave. West Avenue North to Venetian Causeway Venetian Causeway East to N.E. 2nd Ave. N.E. 2nd Ave. South to Brickell Ave; Brickell South to Bayshore Drive; Bayshore Drive South to Finish in 2600 block (100 yards North of McFarlane). We have consulted with Captain Sparks and Sargeant Campbell at the City of Miami Police Department (traffic section), as well as Sargeant Morris (Explorer Scouts), and we are making the necessary arrangements for proper police protection As the city is a co-sponsor of the event, it would be deeply appreciated if the City could provide us with the necessary motorcycle police escorts (between six and ten are tentatively estimated necessary). The estimated elapsed time to complete the 19.7 mile race is just under one hour. As Race Director of the Great Coconut Grove Bicycle Race, I feel that this event would add greatly to the favorable media coverage and publicity (nationwide) that the event already attracts, and the local publicity would publicize the Main Event on Sunday molt advantageously.
