As originally designed the first floor elevation of +7'-0" would require extensive dewatering during the placement of the foundation. The Architect/ Engineer and Construction Manager determined that by raising the elevation of the first floor to 9'-0", a savings of more than $60,000 would be appreciated in the foundations contract. The site work contractor was directed for a cost of $27,363.99, to increase the height of the radial surcharge, raise the backfill and place additional limerock to raise the area under the mat. This resulted in a reduction of dewatering costs on the subsequent foundation contract of $62,206.99, thus giving the City a net savings of $34,843.00.
