Suddenly a bright arc of colors appeared over the Everglades. "Look, a rainbow!" cried the newly elected chairman of the Seminole Indian tribe. "But where's the pot of'old?" f profit can be found anywhere on„the Seminoles' three federal res- ervations, Billie intends to find it. He's unabashedly committed to making money for the tribe. The largest reservation is the 70,- 000•acre Big Cypress, mostly in tar West Broward and partly in Palm Beach and Hendry counties. The Brighton reservation on the north- western shore of Lake Okeecchobee is about half as large as Big Cy- press. The other Broward reserva- tion, about 500 acres, is on the north edge of Hollywood between State Road 7 and Florida's Turn- pike. IN TWO WEEKS, the Seminoles will begin a new business venture — a bingo hall In Hollywood next to their tax-free cigaret stores. "It will make quite a bit more than the smoke shops," Billie enthused. "The United States wasn't built on grants," he went on. "I'll be able to establish the things I want much faster. Our people don't need to go on living in a 16th-Century atmo- sphere when we should be getting ready for the 25th." Steeped in their ways, some of the 1,200 Seminoles are resisting their aggressive 35-year-old chair- man's efforts. Businessmen among them who are accustomed to their privileges are unhappy with him. So are some of the older traditional- ists, including some formidable. Baptists. "Keep a low profile and give them hell," he snorted. "It's just too bad. We're living in a modern world." BILLIE * * * TO BILLIE, breaking tradition comes easily. He's apt to arrive for business conferences in his yellow sports car titer a morning of alligator wres- tling. Today, he won't have to face, another Tribal Council meeting, when protracted presentation' prompt him to thunder that he's in ,danger of falling asleep. we're not going to have anything," Billie replied hotly. "I've been in here six months. You've been pray- ing to God all these years and have you seen Him come down and do anything for you?" Once she had Billie cornered, she also let the chairman know what she thinks plans for a crafts store at Big Cypress. Billie operates a simi- lar shop In Hollywood, the Native Village, under a tribal lease. Until he became chairman, he also ran a profitable chickee-building firm. "They're poor," she complained of the money -losing craft stores. "Don't tell me about it. They should all be bulldozed." Her teen -aged son interrupted: "It's all right as long as the custom- ers buy their Cokes here." THE CHAIRMAN beamed. "Now, you've got business sense," he exclaimed. Trouble is, many of the Indians who run businesses leased from the tribe don't think Blllle's stand on business makes sense. On the one hand, he' wants leases revised so more profits go to the tribe..But he also says he's encouraging individu- al enterprise. "He wants some sort of commun- istic operation," said former Chair- man Howard Tommie, who leases smoke shops. "What happens to the individual who wants to do busi- ness?" * * * BILLIE TRIED not to sound an- noyed as he left Big Cypress. Back in the plane, he was smarting over her criticism. "We finally get the land back and now they want to give it away,".he blurted out. More mulling. "If I don't do what they want, they can kick me out." But back in the air, he was filled with his plans again. North Perry Airport was in sight and he pre- tended to speak into the plane's radio microphone. "Seminole Mr Lines welcomes you," he said. "Who knows? It` could happen one day. I dream a , lot.,, AmeriFirst announces -I` Ireasi TWIN DOUBLE SPECIAL A VARIETY OF CITRUS PECANS, CHOC. COCO. PATTIES, PECAN ROLL. JELLIES. SHIRES Branch 33141 Triumphant members of the Associated Racing team celebrate their model car victory after Five pounds of power goes Ion ELIOTT RODRIGUEZ MI11,1 Nun Reporter Tom McGary is a six-foot, heavy -set General Motors automotive engineer whose hobby is rac- ing cars. He likes the big ones that roll off GM's assembly line, but his favorites come in a smaller size. McGary's hobby is racing radio -controlled model cars. He enjoys it so much that he didn't think twice about driving all the way from his home in Michigan for the second annual "24 Hours of Miami" model -car race, which ended yesterday at Tropical Park. • • "I'll be back next year," McGary said- after he and four other members of the Associated Racing Team broke the world record for a 24- hour race. McGary and the other model -car racers from all over the country who took part in the. race don't think their hobby is kid stuff. "It's an adult hobby," said McGary, who also races dragsters. "The kids couldn't afford to compete the way we compete." The competition yesterday was so stiff that at times it looked like the drivers and pit crews were at the Indianapolis 500 instead of the Trop- ical Park parking lot. Five teams with drivers from Orlando, Fort. Myers, Iowa, Louisiana, California and Michigan entered the race. Each had one 22-inch-long plas- tic car, five drivers who took turns operating the radio controls, and a pit crew. The starting gun went off at 2 p.m. Saturday and the cars contined to whiz around the track until the checkered flag was waved at 2 p.m. yesterday by a member of the South Florida Radio -Controlled Car Club, which sponsored the race. The plastic cars, each about five pounds and carrying one -horsepower engines, made hun- dreds of treks around the track at speeds of up to 100 mph. Their four -ounce tanks had to be filled with liquid methane every six minutes. The "drivers" steered their cars while stand- ing on a two -foot -high wooden platform.
