As you know, the President has asked the United States Olympic Committee to seek either a transfer, postponement,, or, if necessary, a U.S. boycott of the Summer' Olympic Games in Moscow as long as Soviet forces remain in Afghanistan. The Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan is a violent act of aggression which cannot go unanswered. As the President stated in his recent letter to the Chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee, "We must make it clear to the Soviet Union that it cannot trample upon an independent nation and at the same time do business as usual withthe rest of the world. The Soviet Union attaches enormous political importance to the holding of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, and if the Olympics are not ``,held' there because of Soviet military aggression in Afghanistan, this signal of world outrage cannot be hidden from the Soviet people and will reverberate around the world." The President appreciates your taking the time and trouble to express your views on this important issue, and thanks you for your support of his decision. Sincerely,. Jack H.
