Mr. Joseph Grassie, 1
City Manager cam'
Miami City Hall, Dinner Key
Miami, Florida 33133
Dear Mr. Grassie:
As.I explained to you.yesterday, the American National Chopin
Co.^;petition being held at ,iliami, Florida Mlarcii 9-15 1980 re-
quires more support.from public funds than will be the`.case'in
the future. Because'this Foundation is so recently established
(August, 1977--1. R. S. tax -exemption dating from April, 1978),
we,are.,not yet on' the list of businessfirms.hereabouts which
contribute to..cultural organizations.. And for lack of having
produced such an event previously, we are ineligible for grants
from virtually every private Foundation which customarily sup-
ports projects such as ..this Competition. Once we have held
this event successfully there:will-be alternative sources of
funding for the 1984 Competition.
Dade County has to date provided.$22,500. to the Competition,.
and is being approached for further support. The City .of Coral,
Gables has provided $2,500. so far. Apart' from a scholarship
grant through the NEA-City neighborhood -arts .program, we:have
had no support from the City of Miami, the entity which .will
actually reap all the benefits in terms'of'nationwide and world,
wide publicity. We would appreciate being -put-on the agenda
for a Commission meeting as soon as possible to present our
urgent request for-$10,000. from -the City.
As you will have observed from the membership and ticket informa-
tion folder,,this will be the biggest single cultural event yet
held anywhere in Florida; a National Competition which is world
class, and which -is attracting vast media attention. Of the
60..outstanding young performers who qualified, only 35 of the .top
young pianists,,in the country were accepted here.. As I toid :
you yesterday, the prize winners will perform.all across.the `,
natio -during the Spring and Summer, prior . to going : to Warsaw
to represent us. They will carry, with them permanefitly,.the dis-
tiction."prizewinner of the American:National Chop in:.Competition:'
at Miami, Florida.
Sincerely your[[
Warren O' Reill l `
