i rmances..iRe He also offers Koenig a job as one . of his combine crew. The reluctant Koenig agrees to try his hand at the work. Unwittingly, the two men find they have something to give each other — Burkhardt the help and confidante he needs and Koenig. a new perspective on his life. The weakness of Trevey's script Is the character of Koenig. A New York photographer's model strand- ed in Kansas is just not very credi- ble. He seems to be something of a, i nerd and this is not a big -city type who is easily won over to the gran- deur of the wheat fields, l,et alone hard, physical labor. The script never expands enough on Koenig's background and char- acter to make his big. conversion ring true. Russell, a good young actor, tries his best, but his Koenig is unconvincing. WEAVER IS in good company with the rest of the cast. Mare Win- nigham as daughter, Marlene, little Ross Harris as the boy, Dougie, and the others seem as born to the Kan- sas soil as Weaver is. ABC's +promotional advertising for the film boasted "Amber Waves" is "a story that could hap- pen only in America." This is a small fib..The movie was filmed in Alberta, Canada. This was because Weaver and Russell were not avail- able for the movie's production in time for the harvesting anywhere but in Canada. However, viewers will find that wheat fields look much the same South or North of the border. ODOCcE(cANpFRRO(NT , S,1 w USTmoTEI (,F PER PEfiS.! The towering, gangling actor gives a performance that lifts the two-hour ABC Sunday -night movie "Amber Waves" right up to the su- perior filmmaking class. A slightly — very slightly — flawed scrip by Ken Trevey pre- vents the movie from achieving really epic status. But no matter. It will go unnoticed as Weaver plays out the personal drama of a quietly heroic, inwardly tormented Kansas wheat harvester. Weaver's- Elroy "Bud" Burk- hardt, an itinerant harvester with a fleet of big wheat gathering com-• banes, is a man consumed by time. He and his crew are relentlessly driven to bring his client farmers' wheat at the moment of ripening, before the ruinous rains and hail of approaching winter descends. . AS THE FILM begins, Burkhardt has just had a physical checkup "and learned that he has lung cancer so advanced it demands immediate surgery. This, at the very crest of the harvest. Burkhardt has a teenage daugh- ter, Marlene, and a 9-year-old son, Dougie, both too young to share his plight. An older son lives in Canada where he had fled several years earlier as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam war. They have be- come estranged. The son agrees to come for a visit but refuses to stay, not knowing of his father's cancer. The harvester tries desparately to sell out his rigs and business to a one-time friend, now turned enemy. The local bank is of no help. JACK ANDERSON herald tit-redio editor By accident he meets Larry Koe- nig (Kurt Russell), who is hitchhik- ing.
