SALT LAKE. CITY — (AP) —
The Mormon Church, in an effort to
"bring temples to the people." has
announced plans to build seven new
temples — one in the United States ;
and six abroad.
The announcement came as the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints, headquartered in Salt
Lake City, prepares to celebrate its
150th anniversary Sunday.
The new temples are part of a
worldwide effort to "preach the
Gospel to every creature," said
church President Spencer W. Kim-
ball.
None will compare in size or
grandeur to present temples, and
some of the new ones will be as
small as one -sixteenth the size of
the new Salt Lake Valley temple,
now under construction.
The c:hurch's Annual General
Conference hegins Saturday in Salt
Lake City. On Sunday, the partici-
pants will Lear Kimball speaking
via remote telecast from it chapel in
Fayette, N.Y., where the church
was born in 1S30.
"We expect tit go forward :kith
this program and gi%v it grout
strength throughout the v,-orld,"
said Kimball, 85.
The: church, %vith 1.5 million
members, no«, has 17 temples and
four others under construction.
The new temples are to tie con-
structed in Atlanta: Buenos Aires,
Argentina; Sydney. Australia: San-
tiago, Chile; Papeete. Tahiti; Nu-
ku'alofa, Tonga: and Apia, Western
Somoa.
The Sornuan temple replaces a
planned structure at Yugo Pago,
American Samoa.
Designs call for white, towerless
structures of 8,500, 12,500 or
26,000 square feet. The church's
Jordan River Temple in the Salt
Lake area will be 140,000 square
feet.
