Home My WebLink AboutR-80-0312RESOLUTION NO. 8 O- 3 12 A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE CITY OF MIAMI's ENDORSEMENT FOR THE CREATION OF THE FLORIDA INSURANCE EXCHANGE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND RECOMMENDING THAT SUCH AN INSURANCE EXCHANGE BE LOCATED IN GREATER MIAMI, AS ONLY THIS AREA HAS ALL THE REQUISITIES TO MAKE SUCH AN EXCHANGE SUCCESSFUL AND PROFITABLE. WHEREAS, Representative Bill Sadowski introduced a bill that was passed in the 1979 Florida Legislature enabling an insurance ex- change, similar in operations to that of Lloyds of London, to be established in the State of Florida, and WHEREAS, such an insurance exchange would provide employment to many Florida residents, and WHEREAS, such an insurance exchange would provide yet another element in the economic development of the State of Florida, and WHEREAS, such an insurance exchange would add millions of dollars to the capital investment in the State of Florida, as invest- ments of the underwriting syndicates of individuals and corporations, both domestic and foreign, and WHEREAS, such an insurance exchange would insure casualty risks involving re -insurance, extremely large coverage, and/or unusal situa- tions, and WHEREAS, the market for such risks would be primarily foreign, international financial services, communications and transportation, and WHEREAS, the international banking community world-wide is heavily involved in funding re -insurance operations, and WHEREAS, Greater Miami has 24 Florida banks with international departments, 17 international banking agencies, and 21 Edge Act corpora- tions; and has in excess of 1,200 non-stop, direct flights per week to foreign cities, and has direct -dial telephonic service with bilingual operators and is one of five U. S. telephonic gateways. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: Section 1. The City of Miami endorses the creation of the Florida Insurance Exchange as soon as possible and recommends that such an insurance exchange be based in Greater Miami, as only this area has all the requisites to make such an exchange successful and profitable. Cast an , Director Department of Trade & Commerce Development "It is recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution expressing the City of Miami's support for the proposed Florida Insurance Exchange." The Department of Trade & Commerce Development in conjunction with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce is working to stimulate local support for the proposed Florida Insurance Exchange. The attached Resolution is an expression of support for the Florida Insurance Exchange and recommends that the Greater Miami area be the location for the project. This Resolution upon City Commission adoption will be forwarded to the recently appointed Florida Insurance Exchange Committee which is chaired by State Insurance Commissioner Bill Gunter. r80-3i2
