Florida 33133 (305) 444-5997 May 20, 1980 Dear Fellow Merchants: At the present moment I am extremely proud. to be a part of Coconut Grove. My business; my livelihood; and my home; all are untouched by the insan- ity that has been raqinq in Miami for the past few days. And so are yours. Not one window was broken; not one business torched or looted ... east of McDonald. Coconut Grove has long been an area where various disparate groups could co -exist in harmny, yet we in the village center - Past Grove if you will - owe a great debt today to our neiqhbors in West Grove. The few hoodlums, many not from the Grove, who were on our streets during these bleak days were far outnumbered by the responsible black citizens who took to the streets, at no small risk to their ovm safety, to act as calming influences on the few. Pest (,rove residents were, and are, just as sick at heart and angry about the McDuffie incident, or the IA -Fleur case, etc., as blacks everywhere in Dade County - but they did not lash out in a frenzy of looting and destruction. T#Te must now open the doors to our friends - and they are our friends - living west of McDonald. They care about Coconut Grove, and have proved it! I wish to suggest the establishment of an interest -free loan fund, to be ad- ministered by a group of local citizens, in conjunction wit)- the PAC (People Against Crime), Council and the Black Businessmen's Association, to help the businesses that suffered damage in IIest Grove re -(-)pen their doors. This is the time - no more cheap talk - no more tokenism. h 00W_ Coconut Grove Merchant's Association 3043 Grand Avenue, Coconut Grove, Florida 33133. (305) 444-5997 It is an inexpensive way for you to say "thank you" to your fellow Coconut Grove residents and business people. If you can provide $100.00, or whatever you can afford, to be used as a loan fund that will be repaid when the repairs can be done and the businesses are operating again, you will be saying to the world, in more than words, that Coconut Grove is safe to visit and shop in; you will be say- ing to the world that Coconut drove takes care of its own. Please - fill out the attached form and send it to me. This may be the most important thing you have done in years. We invite the participation of the Chamber of Ccmmeree, area residents, and many other concerned persons.
