HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-80-0406RESOLUTION NO. 8 n- 4 O 6 A RESOLUTION ACCEPTING THE DONATION OF CLOTHING AND FOOD FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE. CIVIL DISTURBANCE DURING MAY 17-19, 1980. AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO ADMINISTER THE COLLECTION AND DISTRIBUTION. WHEREAS, the City of Miami witnessed one of the most severe civil disturbances in its history during the period of May 17th — 19th, 1980; and WHEREAS, residents of the City of Miami were severely affected by the civil disturbance in their normal patterns of subsistence; and WHEREAS, the City of. Miami Administration in conjunction with concerned citizens and organizations, sought to alleviate the agony suffered by the residents instituted and carried out a successful temporary meal distribution program for the affected residents of the Overtown Area; and WHEREAS, in an effort to further alleviate the agony suffered by residents of the Overtown Area and residents of the City of Miami at large, concerned citizens and organizations have sought and received clothing for distribution to affected residents of the City of Miami; and WHEREAS, the concerned citizens and organizations have requested the assistance of the City of Miami to provide a central location for collection and distribution of said clothing and food and to administer the same, WHEREAS, the City of Miami Administration in response to the request of said citizens and organizations has expressed the concern and desire to provide facilities for collection of clothing and food and administration of the same. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION ((O++F THE CITY OF MIAMI, idDO ii�^�' E" IIn��UCA FLORIDA: ITEM NO. it Section 1. The clothing collected by concerned citizens and organizations is hereby accepted by the City of Miami for distribution to affected residents of the City of Miami. Section 2. Authorize the City Manager to administer the collection and distribution of food and clothing for affected residents of the City of Miami. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 6th day of JUNE , 1980. Gary ^� occurred May 17 - 19, 1980 Assistant City'Manager It is recommended that the attached resolution be adopted by the City Commission in its meeting of June 6, 1980, authorizing the City Manager to accept and administer the distribution of food and clothing for the victims of the Civil Disturbances which occurred May 17 - 19, 1980. At the Commission Meeting of May 22, 1980, the City Commission approved the sum of $40,000 to provide a temporary food distribution program for needy residents in the Overtown Area during the period May 22 - 26, 1980. Since then, the City of Miami has received numerous offers of assistance for the residents of the affected area in terms of food and clothing. It is, therefore, recommended that the City undertake the collection and distribution of these contributions. The attached resolution authorizes the City Manager to accept and administer the distribution -of all such donations offered to the City of Miami for the purpose herein. 80-406
