higher level means a more expen-

Mom than a year ago. Amway
bougeht part of Peter Island, a resort
ItZ and yacht club In the British
Virgin Islands. During the low tour-
ist seasons, Amway rewards suc-
cessful distributors with free or
cut-rate vacations.
"When they reach diamond, the
couple goes to our Island in the Car-
Ibbean for a week." says Roger
Krause. Amway's U.S. sales vice
president. "When they reach double
diamond and have 12 people at that
level, we send the Amway jet to
their town, bring them to Ada for a
day In their honor and send them on
a paid tour to some place like Rio."
Amway claims more than
300,000 distributors worldwide. All
It takes to get into the business is
$20 to $50. depending on the
amount of products the distributor
starts with, says company spokes-
man Jack Wilkie.
One of the speakers during a re-
cent direct distributors' seminar at
Ada was Randy Preston, Amway's
vice president of distributor ser-
vices. Preston spent most of his
time showing the crowd bonus
checks of $64,000 and $100.000
that recently had been processed.
He did not mention that part of the
money must be paid by the distribu-
tor to his distributors.
"We're all susceptible to the dy-
namics of a meeting, to those
checks and slide shows." says a for-
mer Amway employee who asked
anonymity. "These people use the
success stories of a few people, but
It's like the gold rush. A few people
made it big, but most didn't make it
at all."
AMWAY mitigates the disap-
pointment of distributors who don't
make It by buying back their prod-
ucts.
One couple that made it Is Don
and Winona Aultman of Roswell,
Ga. The Aultmans, diamond direct
distributors, were the success
storytellers during a recent seminar
at Ada.
♦ultman, a former educational
psychologist, pastor and college
vice president, spoke of his hoine,
his trips to Jamaica and Hawaii,
and urged his audience to enjoy
"the challenge of getting filthy
rich." His wife talked of the days
before they 'found the business."
"You know, in those days. soap
was making my hands red," she
said. "Now It's doing something
else to my hands." As she dangled
one hand over the edge of the podi-
um. the light caught the sparkle of
three diamond rings.
Although corporate officials
praise the quality of the products —

ry to vitamins — distributors often

AFTER YEARS of hearing...,ow-
ever, the FTC In 1979 cleared
Amway, because pyramid schemes
require a lare entry fee or taking a
chance on non -returnable products.
Amway avoided that by Its buy-
back policy and small sums re-
quired to start in the business.
The FTC even commended the
firm for a sales system that "elimi-
nates the need for expensive pro-
motion and advertising and that en•
courages repeat customers."
But the iTC also found that
Amway had engaged in fixing
wholesale and retail prices that its
distributors could charge and that it
had misrepresented the distributors'
earning potential. The agency is-
sued a cease.and.desist order, and
the company did not appeal.
The order was made public on
the day Amway was honored as the
"business of the year" by Grand
Rapids, a city that feels the Amway
presence everywhere.
In suburban Ada. 3,400 Amway
employes work three shifts a day,
five days a week to manufacture
more than 200 products shipped
across the United States and to 13
foreign countries.
The products — like spot clean-
ers, laundry detergent, floor wax —
are not necessarily cheaper than
items on supermarket shelves. In
fact, many are more expensive.
"While it may appear that our prod-
ucts are more expensive, they are
designed for a multiplicity of uses
and are concentrated so they last
longer," says Amway's Wilkie.
In addition to the Ada complex.
which has grown since 1960 from a
converted gasoline station to more
than three million square feet of
floor space. Amway has acquired a

Students recently complained to
the school board attar several
teachers attended a midweek moll•
vauonel seminar in Miami. The
teachers took time, off under a
"compassionate leave" dame of
their contact.
Michael McDougall. a school
board member. says. "We don't ap-
school time
to fu herna wood career It con -
come us that Amway expects you
to contact your friends and col-,
leagm. That means a teacher will
contact other members of the staff.
Can you as the difficulty of the
princippaal goinf to his staff and MY-
iag,'Why don t you try Amway?"'
Amway spokesman Wilkie says
Brennan High is involved "In an
ethical situation" and that Amway
"would not condone" the kind of
pressures McDougall Is worried
about.
Meantime. Amway continues Its
smasing growth.
Last June. the company bought
Mutual Broadcasting System. -
whose 950 radio affiliates make it
the nation's largest radio network.
The company Is preparing to
christen a second yacht for Its mari-
na of motivation at Peter Island. A
helicopter has been added to the
fleet of four jets based at Grand
Rapida' airport.
Will the company mach a satura-
tion point? Could America become a
nation of distributors with no one
to sell to?
"We have done some calculations
and we think it would be half a cen-
tury or century before we reach
that position. Van Andel says.
"But with our turnover. it will
probably never happen.
