OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
September 15, 1981
Honorable Maurice A. Ferre
Mayor, City of Miami
P. 0. Box 330708
Miami, Florida 33133
Dear Mayor Ferre:
As you are aware, next year marks the fourth annual running of the
Orange Bowl Marathon. The Marathon, an official Orange Bowl Festival
event, is co -sponsored by Burdines, Metropolitan -Dade County and
Florida International University (FIU). However, the marathon is
organized by FIU and the finances of the event are handled through
the FIU Foundation,
The Orange Bowl Marathon is now the third largest Orange Bowl Festival
event.with an estimated 1981 participation of over 3,000 runners and
more than 25,000 spectators. The race will be held on January 17, 1981
and will start and finish at the Orange Bowl. Approximately 10,000
brochures (sample attached) have already been sent to potential
participants providing general information on the vace and identifying
the Orange Bowl as the start and finish site.
University representatives have negotiated a tentative -fee of $2,500
for use of the Orange Bowl from 5am to 2pm on January 17th. Additionally,
FIU is to cover an estimated $2,500 in extra costs associated with the
use of the Bowl. To incur $5,000 total costs would require using
10% of our sponsorship cash. We are therefore requesting that the City
of Miami waive the rental fee for the use of the Orange Bowl. Naturally,
the University will cover all other costs and the City of Miami will
receive recognition as a supporting sponsor.
FIU is indeed grateful of past City of Miami support and we hope that
you and the City Commission will favorably consider this fee waiver
request. I, of course, will be happy to provide you with additional
information or answer any questions.

The Story of a Race
The 1980 Orange Bowl Marathon
By Basil Honikman, and Michael Browner
This is the story of a race. It is like a play —an allegorical comedy: it
fits the template of a dramatist's plot. It is a microcosm of people's doings.
It's full of noble foolishness, courage, honour and hypocrisy. It deals with
hope, achievement, failure and despair. It has characters, chorus and
sets. It has an audience who watch the various acts unfold. Its real intent
is very simple but it is understood in countless different ways, and like a
play it takes two to three hours but often drags on much longer.
The Stage
The stage for the race is Miami and its streets,The Banyans line the
+ way, filtering the winter sun which controls the characters with devilment.
The Characters:
Ron Hill: International Champion holder of European and Common-
wealth Games gold medals. Fifth fastest marathon runner of all time.
Joyce Smith: Winner of the Waldniel Women's International Cham-
pionship and with Grete Waitz, Joan Benoit, Lorraine Moller and maybe
one or two others, the best in the world.
Dorthe Rasmussen: Danish Champion and former European junior track
champion.
Sissel Grottenberg: Norwegian Champion and one of the select few who
have run below 2:40,
Ken Misner: One of the most talented of American runners. Part of the
great Florida Track Club of the early 1970's which included Bachelor,
Shorter and Galloway.
Stan Curran: British International and Orange Bowl Marathon Champion
and record holder.
Kirk Pfeffer: Who almost ran away with the N.Y. Marathon.
Tom Fleming: Who has more sub-2:20 marathons than any other
American,
Jim Rafferty: Who was third in the 1979 Orange Bowl Marathon.
Chnmpwn Ken Misner only 10-yards to go.

Clinics by noted runners are planned for
early December and the Thursday night
before the race. Watch our Miami news-
papers and your mailbox for details.
Also a race directors' workshop is
planned for January 16th, the day before
the Orange Bowl Marathon.This workshop
deals with race planning, budgeting,
course layout and measurement, finish line
procedures, timing, sponsorship and offi-
cials. If you are a race director, these are
critical areas of organization, This work-
shop is for race directors to help you run
your next race and is sponsored by Brooks
Shoe Manufacturing Co. Inc, and the Road
Runners Club of America. Each workshop
will feature a member of the Brooks/RRCA
Advisory Board (Ruby Straub, Ben Barron,
Len Wallach, Jerry Kokesh, Chris Tatreau,

"...but I've got this Achilles problem..:"
Greetings, words of advice, P.A. announcements criss-cross.
"20 Minutes to Starting Time"
A murmur, part fear, part excitement, rustles through the crowd.
Sweats come off revealingly, suddenly, the hues of modern running,
ranging from stark black to loud fuscia.
Before the sentry -box row of toilets, snaking lines wriggle with
nervous life as body needs and the imminent start seemed doomed to
clash. Only before the start of a marathon do men and women discuss
the intricate working of human plumbing and the eventual outcome of last•
night's meal;
"Oh! My stomach"
Suddenly, and for no apparent reason, runners begin to move
lemming -like toward the start banner. The characters begin to talk to
each other —nervously —hoping to learn a last-minute secret which will
enable them to break all their previous personal records. Some try
to lay the groundwork for the later justification of possible failure;
"I'm using this as a training run so I'm just going to take it easy," as if
someone had asked him a question.
"I'm not really fit —had this operation, you know" (in 1962).
"I'm just getting back:"
"..,ran a long, hard 10 yesterday."
Others seek security by making pacts with their friends..." Let's go
out together... nice and easy... and see what happens, o.k.?"
"Five Minutes to Start"
A steady stream of words issues from the P.A. speakers; then comes
a cannon boom, a cheer. A few runners step forward, are restrained as
race walkers and wheelchair entrants start.

Act I
Scene II
The starting line crowd moves a few yards to the corner of Dupont
Plaza and Biscayne Boulevard, The watches tick towards the five-minute
mark. Round the corner comes Jorn Lauenborg of Denmark with the first
mile behind hire. It's still cool but humid and the sun is breaking up the
haze. There is strain on his face.Tom Persson, Sugaya, Dahl and the other
Scandinavians are close behind. Five more yards and defending
champion Curran is settling into his long driving stride, Ron Hill is taking
stock, sensing the weather, gauging his strength, ruefully sighing about
the 25 miles ahead,
Joyce Smith, Dorthe Rasmussen and Sissel Grottenberg are
already together, each wary of the others' abilities. No sign of Ken Misner.
Billy Squires: "I'll just go 20 today." He talks to everyone.
Rob Roy MacGregor: "Hi:'
He is obviously elated by the excitement as he turns his feet
towards the river and his thoughts towards his new designs for shoes,
The runners pass. The sun climbs. The crowd cranks
up.Then the streets are still. The pack settles. In the lead, it's all business,
concentration and determination. Slightly further back the "planning"
has begun:
"Do you think we went out too fast?"
"I think we can keep this pace till ten miles and then see how we feell"
"Is this your first marathon?"
I
"Well, actually I'm a tennis player, but I just thought I'd give this a shot
Like to be able to tell them back at the club that I ran the Orange Bowl
Marathon:"
Act I
Scene III
The finish line area is all but deserted. The bleachers are empty.
Everything is neat, orderly and quiet. A few officials drink coffee and
speculate, Rows of red cones mark the chutes, The digital clock shows
four minutes as it ticks silently towards four hours and more.
Act 2
Scene
At the 8 mile marker a race official talks to a policeman. About 50
people wait.
Policeman: "Here they come now."
Race Official: "Looks like the Swede Persson has broken away."
Tommy passes all action, sweating heavily, a good distance ahead of
the lead pack. He doesn't look round, but he must have doubts. He was
the top Swede in 1979 but has not run many marathons. He wonders how
much he will have to pay for going out hard.
In the pack, looking "all business and confidence", are Sugaya,
Curran, Rafferty, Dahl, Simmondsen and Stahl. Smith and Rasmussen
are still together, but Grottenberg has dropped back and Misner is just
cruising about two minutes behind the lead.
Scene II
Through the Grove they run, past the Playhouse and on to Coco -
plum circle and halfway. It is approximately 9:15. Now the streets are
jammed with people. Everyone looks for Curran and Hill. The noise and
encouragement lift the runners as they begin the 10 kilometers of Banyan
shade on Old Cutler Road.

Still going out are the not -less determined but slower runners. No
trophies or medals for these; no victory except the victory of self over self.
Fatigue lies ahead but they pretend ignorance: they talk now and then,
wave to friends, stop to drink. When next they pass this point they will be
silent, fearful of the "wall:* each one caught in that awful dilemma, "I
can't —but I must:'
Fast and slow alike have a common enemy: the sun, heat, and the
dread of dehydration. No clouds now, to give occasional solace.
Tommy Persson comes down hill to the excited cheers and cries of
encouragement reserved for the leaders.
Thirty seconds behind is Ken Misner easing along in his deceptive,
soft-shoe shuffle. He must be sweating, but one doesn't notice, so
peaceful does he seem.
Half -smiling, Jim Rafferty passes quietly. Can he improve on his
third place'79 finish? He thinks so, and almost does only to lose by a
rnere five seconds to Tommy Persson's final surge.
From the Circle now there comes a special kind of cheer; it has but
one meaning. The first woman is at hand. Excitement ripples visibly down
the hill; even outgoing runners are momentarily lifted to a longer stride, a
faster pace.
Smith has opened 15 seconds on Rasmussen. Grottenberg, the
Norwegian, is out of the race,

Final Act
The Finish
The crowd packs tightly on both sides of Biscayne Boulevard, The
finish line area, deserted and calm two hours ago, is alive with movement
and anticipation.
The sun has won, Everyone knows it.
Two miles out Persson is fading fast. Misner has picked up his pace
and is still cruising• Rafferty is gaining.
Near the Rickenbacker Causeway Misner takes the lead. An
imposter has a jug of water poured over his head to simulate sweat
and enters the race in second place, only to be removed by officials
and police.
Ayell of excitement travels along the crowd and keeps pace
with Misner.
Quickly he comes into view with a big smile of delight on his face. He
has run the second half three minutes faster than the first. A remarkable
piece of race management and judgement.
The ovation is tremendous and the cheering continues as Rafferty is
only seconds behind Persson. Somehow the Swede drags up the last
vestiges of his courage and energy and fights to the line leaving Rafferty
a gallant third for the second year. Misner has set a new Orange Bowl
Marathon Record. 2:18:31,
Most courageous perhaps of all is Joyce Smith, knowing she is
weakening, knowing that Rasmussen is coming up fast, fights herself into
unconsciousness as the Dane passes her with less than half a mile logo.
Rasmussen wins the women's race in what must be one of the greatest
runs of all time. Who knows what this 2:41 would be worth on a good day,
let alone a cold, brisk runner's day?
Now, for nearly two hours, the runners cross the finish line• Each one
a winner. The first -timers show elation• The experienced ones ruminate,
trying to reflect on what it all meant. Mostly there is joy, some relief, some
concern. The streets are clear. The people leave• The scene fades out,
The clock ticks on ... to next year•

Application and race information for January 17,1981, Starting time: 7A.M.
..'crfiiat
This yc ar's race will start and finish in the Orange Bowl Stadium,
The 1981 Orange Bowl Marathon,
scheduled for January 17th, will be the
fourth running of the race and there will
be some changes. Most significant of
these are:
1. The START will be at 7:00 a.m.
2. The course will be modified slightly
to include starting and finishing at the
legendary Orange Bowl.
The 7:00 a.m. start means that the level
of direct solar radiation on even a bad day,
will be relatively low for most of the race.
By 10:30 the sun should still be low in the
sky. The move to the Orange Bowl was a
natural. This stadium is one of the symbols
of sport in Amerisa. Finding a new site
became essential when building de-
velopment began to make if difficult for
the Intercontinental Hotel site to accom-
modate the finish line facilities and
provisions.
Starting and finishing at the same place
has considerable organizational and logis-
tical advantages. There is plenty of parking
for runners, friends, families and spec-
tators. The stadium has all kinds of facilities
for everyone including refreshments.
Marathon day in the Orange Bowl will
be a festival of excitement and sport,
so runners, urge your friends to be
there on January 171
x
On behalf of runners, the Orange Bowl
Marathon Committee extends a greeting of
appreciation and thanks to all the spon-
sors. The major sponsors are Burdines of
Florida, The Dade County Council of Arts
and Sciences, the Tourist Development
Council, and the Metropolitan Dade
County Board of Commissioners, This is the
second year they have generously sup-
ported the race and we hope this can
become a permanent event on their future
calendars,
Florida International University hosts the
marathon for the fourth time. The Univer-
sity provides the offices, phones and an
administrative team together with the use
of its various facilities and resources.
Special acknowledgement should also be
made to the FIU Student Government
Association. Their wish to be involved has
materialized through a contribution by the
governing body and this gesture is greatly
appreciated.
The 1980 race was also supported by
associate sponsors. Institutions and cor-
porations contribute their products, ser-
vices, expertise and encouragement: In

most cases they are athletic shoe manufac-
turers and they encourage championship
class runners to take part in the marathon
and assist by paying expenses.
We are particularly proud to associate
with NIKE, ADIDAS, ASICS-TIGER,
BROOKS, ETONIC and EVIAN, All these
80-656
companies are providing merchandise
prizes and are contributing to runners'
travel expenses, In addition NIKE is provid-
ing T-shirts for the runners and BROOKS is
staging a special clinic for race directors
and organizers. We would like to extend a
special Thank -you to NIKE which seems to
have adopted the Orange Bowl Marathon.
Most of the people at NIKE are runners
themselves and we value highly the ad-
vice, interest and special efforts of all the
NIKE people, especially Nelson Ferris,
Judy Manning, John Gregorio, Kirk
Richardson and David Kottkarnp. We are
also grateful to Dean Reinke of Brooks, Dr.
Rob Roy MacGregor and Tom Dederian of
Etonic, GeorgeTrumbell and Jon Erikson of
Adidas and Jim Maloney and Mr. Onitsuka
himself of ASICS Tiger.

MEI)ADE
The 1978-79 Orange Bowl Marathons
featured significant international fields. In
each country, running is governed by a
national body. In the USA it is called the
Athletes Congress. This organization com-
municates with the national organizations
in other countries. This means that each
year we need an A.C. sanction, and to do
this, we must comply with their rules.
Competitive athletes need to be regis-
tered A.C. members in order to compete
in the race. If you plan to orare capable of
running the marathon in four hours or less
or if you run in races on a regular basis you
should consider yoursel f a competitor and
enter in that section. In this case you will
need A.C. membership which of course
serves you for all races in the year. Please
check the appropriate competitor box on
your entry blank and include your A.C.
number. Membership blanks for 1981 may
be obtained from your local A.C. officials.
If you wish to take part for your own per-
sonal achievement and don't make a prac-
tice of competing regularly in other races,
then you need not register. In this case do
not check the competitor box. Entries
from recognized competitive runners
must include their current A.C. rnember-
ship numbers,

For 1981, the starting time will be 7AM in the Orange Bowl,

It is no secret that South Florida is
situated at the edge of the tropics. Visiting
Miami in winter is a delightful experience.
It is the heightof the Miami season•The sun
is warm and soothing. The water is refresh-
ing and the evenings are cool and
seductive.
On most winter mornings running is a
pure delight. Ask anyone who ran the first
Orange Bowl Marathon on December 26,
1977 Even on that day, however, the condi-
tions were not 40' and overcast as they
were on April 18,1979 in Boston when Bill
Rodgers ran the 4th fastest marathon of all
time and everyone else ran a personal
record.
Sometimes it can be hot. The last two
Orange Bowl Marathons turned into tough
struggles, and the champions responded.
In 1980 Tommy Persson, Swedish cham-
pion and Olympian from a less than trop-
ical country, led the race for 24 miles to

The possibility of heat must be treated
as a part of the course. Some great
marathons have stiff excruciating hills. The
Orange Bowl has the possibility of heat.
This is part of the challenge, Understand it,
prepare for it, overcome it and win.
This is what the marathon is all about
and no two are equal. A fast time on an
easy course may be less of an achievement
than a slow mastering of a tough demand-
ing course.
The Orange Bowl Marathon course is
flat, fast and shady, but like many of the
other great ones, it waits for the unsus-
pecting and experienced alike, and with
capricious devilment, can hammer any
runner, If you run the Orange Bowl at or
close to your best standard, you have a
victory indeed.
Some tips for beating the
temperatures:
1. Drink at all the watering stations whether
You feel thirsty or not.
2• Wear white or light-colored clothing.
3. Shade your face and neck if possible
but let the top of your head be unco-
vered so heat can escape.
4. Wear cotton mesh, or even no shirt at all.
Nylon won't let the sweat evaporate and
you lose the consequent cooling effect.

Fifteen fluid replacement stations will
be provided to serve the runners. Four-
teen of these will be out on the course and
the last will be at the finish line area in the
Orange Bowl, In addition, it is hoped that
light refreshments such as fruit and yogurt
will be available.
The map indicates these fluid replace-
ment stations at the 3, 6, 9,11,13,14-1/2,
161/2,19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 mile points.
Present plans include the provision of
Competition ERG, water sponges and
hoses at each station. In addition, we are
proud to announce the generous partici-
pation of EVIAN Waters of France, the
natural spring water company.
In Europe EVIAN is one of the major
natural water companies and they spon-
sor many major athletic events, Observant
TV viewers of the World Cup Ski races will
have noticed their logo on the Skiers'
numbers. The water comes from a natural
spring in a little town called Evian at the
foot of Mont Blanc. It is not carbonated so
it is ideal for our purpose. It contains cal-
cium, magnesium, potassium, sodium,
bicarbonates, sulphates, chlorides and nit-
rates. Evian is pure and light and easy to
digest.
Special thanks are due to Jack Maguire
of Evian in Newyork who, with Woody
Kemper Associates of Miami, made this
association possible.

The pack on Coral Way Arne Stigsen (NorwayA028) leads from Stan Curren (UK A005) defending
champion, Jorn Lavenborg (Denmark A006) and Hisajl Sugaya (Japan A021).
Just follow the broken orange line on
the street and watch for the signs marking
each mile completed.
Although the Orange Bowl Marathon
course has been adjusted its essential
characteristics are retained. Runners will
leave the Orange Bowl stadium. The first
few miles will lead them eastward into the
downtown streets. On reaching the bay,
they turn south along Biscayne Boulevard
and Bayfront Park. Here, at the 3-mile point,
will be the first fluid replacement station.
After about seven blocks, the course
leaves the business area cutting through
Dupont Plaza, across the drawbridge, over
the Miami River, and southward on Brickell
Avenue.
Just past the four -mile point, the course
swings west along Coral Way. This is a
four -mile loop, two miles out and two
miles back, and it enables the "pack" to
see the beginnings of the lead battle as the
front runners return eastward. Its a happy
optimistic point in the race. People greet
and encourage each other as they settle
down to the real business ahead.
At about eight miles, the course swings
south again and follows South Miami
Avenue, across U.S.1 and along Bayshore
Avenue to Mercy Hospital —aptly named
and aptly placed at about 9-1/2 and 21-1/2
miles. Here, a small tour through the lush
vegetation and newly awakened spec-
tators of Coconut Grove, called the Tiger -
tail section, leads into the central business
area of the Grove. Full of charm and
character, with brick sidewalks, sexy
people, boutiques and pavement cafes,
this is one of the most memorable parts of
the race. Watch for the" Playhouse "on your
right, it marks the 12-mile point and the
beginning of almost seven miles of tree.
covered road.
Main Highway continues with huge
Banyans and luxuriant growth. On a fresh
winter morning you can really fly. It's a
good stretch to make up time, Soon you'll
come to the only"hill"on the course (there
is a small rise about 1/2 a mile further on
but late one Saturday night, some carous-
ing runners refused to certify it as a hill, so
we can't count it). Outward bound you'll
be going down. Its total length is about
150 yards and the elevation change is
probably less than 25 feet. No one has
ever bothered to measure it, but if you're
tired on the way back, it can be irritating
and provoke colorful language, This is the
half -way mark and by now you should
have a good idea how your race is working
out. Pick up yoursplit and take lookat the
weather If it's getting warm adjust your
pace —prudence nowwill payoff in seven
to ten miles.
A mile later, at 14 miles, you come to
Cocoplum. This circle has become one of
the traditional spectator points on the
course, Large crowds pack the circle and
cheer the runners both outward and
homeward bound,
r
ti a M25 r, tib+`j4rii

9 0
This is the beginning of the Old Cutler
Road stretch. Cocoplum to Kendall Drive
and back, about 5000 meters of huge trees
with thick foliage meeting overhead form-
ing a leafy tunnel through which to race.
Here again you can see the leaders on their
return trip —unless of course you're one of
them, in which case you may not have time
to notice the almost two -hour-long train of
runners strung out behind you,
Back to Cocoplum and you've got just
over nine miles to go. Up the hill along
Main Highway, through the Grove and now
on to Bayshore, past the Grove Marina just
before 20 miles with bobbing sails and the
almost irresistable water, past the old Pan
Am Flying Boat base which now serves as
Miami's City Hall, along to Kennedy Park, at
21 miles and Mercy Hospital. Take a quick
jig around the Rickenbacker Causeway toll
booths, but make sure you don't cross the
bay to Key Biscayne. Stranger things have
happened so stick to the Orange line.
Now you begin your tour of Brickell
Avenue with the huge towers of expen-
sive apartments and condominiums (or is
it conclominia). The 24-mile mark is just
before the old finish line at the Interconti-
nental Hotel. Soon after the hotel, turn left
and follow the river through old wharfs
and fisheries and workyour way onto N.W.
4th Street. The end is literally in sight. Look
ahead and upwards and you'll see the
Orange Bowl press box perched above
the huge stadium. Only a mile or so now.
The stadium gets closer, you're surrounded
by small houses and soon nothing but the
stadium fills your view Through the gate,
through the stands, and you burst onto the
playing field to take your final lap of honor
as you complete the Orange Bowl
Marathon.
