HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-80-0624MOT-80-264 9/15/80 RESOLUTION NO, 8 0 - 6 24 A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE CITY OF MIAMI A BILINGUAL AND BICULTURAL CITY WHERE THE ENGLISH AND SPANISH LANGUAGES ARE POUND TO THRIVE AND CO -EXIST SUCCESSFULLY AND THAT SPANISH BE CONSIDERED THE SECOND OFFICIAL "SUPPORTIVE LANGUAGE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI; FURTHER WELCOMING VISITORS FROM SPANISH-SPEAKING DOCUMENTS COUNTRIES AND LOOKING FORWARD TO THE DAY WHEN VISITORS AND MERCHANTS FROM EUROPE, ^ U LOW» AFRICA, AND ASIA WILL COME TO OUR COMMUNITY IN EQUAL NUMBERS THEREBY FURTHER ENRICHING OUR CULTURAL MIX AND CONTRIBUTING TO THE ECONOMIC STANDING OF THE CITY OF MIAMI. WHEREAS, the history of the City of Miami has been beneficially and inextricably interlaced with the history of our Spanish-speaking population; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami has also become the gateway to Latin America, providing for tourists and businessmen a center of economic and cultural exchange; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami's economy has benefited tre- mendously from large amounts of Latin American investment and tourists that come to the City and from the jobs that they create; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The City of Miami is hereby designated a bilingual and bicultural City where the English and Spanish languages are found to thrive and co -exist successfully and that Spanish be con- sidered the second official language of the City of Miami. Section 2. The City of Miami hereby welcomes visitors and mer- chants from Spanish-speaking countries and looks forward to the daywhen visitors and merchants from Europe, Africa, and Asia will come to our community in equal numbers thereby further enriching our cultural mix and contributing to the economic standing of the City of Miami.
