Respectfull\•, W . Trent German President; FLORIDA IMARITLME MUSEUM RESOLUTION WHEREAS, representatives of the VMM have appeared before this commission in January and April, 1980 requesting and receiving the unanimous support of the Miami City Commission for the creation of a maritime museum center on appropriate city waterfront property; and WHEREAS, the requested ten acres of Bicen- tennial Park and portions of the FEC property facing the deep water slip and the Miami harbor turning basin con- stitute a site for a major mariti.me museum/center on a par with or superior to any known maritime museum site in the world; and WHEREAS, Bicentennial Park, one of Miami's most well -planned and elegantly designed tropical land- scapes, continues to be an underutilized community _ recreational and aesthetic resource; -and WIiERrn,S, the Statement of Purpose of the Florida Maritime Museum, which is attached as part of this resolution, sets forth a series of goals which are conducive to and compatible with the commercial, cul- tural, recreational and educational development goals of downtown Miami, and V7111FREAS, the Florida Maritime Museum on the proposed site w(iuld help to fill an increasing need for resident and visitor oriented day and evening programs and activities in the downtown area; and WHEP.I:AS, the organizers of the Florida Mari- time Museum have, taken all the necessary steps required to bring the concept, to fruition including incorporation in the State of Florida, the appointment of an appro- priate Board of Trustees and Executive Committee, the adoption of a set of By -Laws and a Statement of Purpose, 7 .. and the assignment of an IRS tax exempt status as pro- vided in Section 509(a)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code, granted as of September 12, 1980; and WHEREAS, the concept of a Florida Maritime Museum in downtown Miami has generated a body of broad and enthusiastic support from leaders in government, business and civic organizations as well as a wide cross section of the citizenry; and WHEREAS, any further progress on the Florida Maritime Museum project depends on the immediate initia- tion of a fund-raising effort to obtain operating and capital funds, and WHEREAS, a successful implementation of said fund-raising effort depends upon a clear declaration of intent by the Miami City Commission, pending all proper legal and administrative processes, to make available a minimum of ten acres of Bicentennial Park as the site of the proposed maritime museum/center.^ NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION THAT: Section 1. The Board of Directors of the Florida Maritime Museum be requested to immediately begin a fund-raising campaign utilizing all appropriate private and public sources. Section 2. Subject to favorable public hear- ings and staff recommendations, the City Commission declares its intent to provide the requested Bicentennial Park and FEC sites for use by the Florida Maritime Museum/Center. The Parks Department recommends to the City Manager's Office the approval of the `taritime Museum concept for Bicentennial Park. The approval of the '•taritime 'luseum concept needs to be submitted to the City Commission in the form of a resolution perhaps at the December 17th rreetina. The preliminar, ar)Froval of the concept of a Maritime Museum does not preclude future more specific review of site plans, budgets any, leaal arrancement�; which will develop dependent on the capability of the :taritime Museum's ability to raise funds.
