For comparative purposes, cost of a conventional type fireboat is also included. MIAMI FIRE DEPARTMENT'S AMPHIBIOUS FIREBOAT 1. Purchase price for three (3), operational boats from U.S. Army $ 7,500 2. Purchase price of NASA type fire pump 268,500 3. Purchase price of water cannons and plumbing 50,000 4. Fuel tank, hull painting, radios, warning lights, etc. 10,000 Total purchase price $ 336,000 NOTE: $336,000 includes two additional boats; one for use as a supply tender, and one for spare parts. 5. Utilizes existing pumper crew, amphibian -- stored in Fire Station; manning cost $ -0- 6. Annual preventative maintenance 2,000 7. Anticipated annual repairs' 3,000 Total annual operation cost $ 5,000 8. No dockage costs involved 9. Fuel consumption costs equal to three (3) pumpers OTHER ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL FIREBOAT 1. Does not require special launch ramps 6. Capable of operating at fires in structures, same as truck 7. Pump module uses proven design components. Jet turbine engine has 15 years industrial application. Eastern Airlines uses same engine in ground support equipment. NASA designed Page 1 of 2 t Mr. Richard L. Fosmoen January 20, 1981 pump is a result of technology transfer from rocket fuel pumps, which have an excellent record of dependability and durability. Master streams 250 ft. reach, 150 ft. loft: Amphibian has full control and can advance on these streams. The Amphibian demonstrates excellent stabil- ity and control with full FIREFLY flow. Three guns in unison demonstrates ability to deliver water onto high structures, berths, decks of vessels and can cover 3600 if required. id Amphibian partially on beach provides water supply through one, two, or three 5 or 6 in. diameter hose(s) to attack pumpers or portable monitors placed in positions of vantage for onshore fires. The large diameter light hose provides a portable surface main that can be laid thousands of feet inland. Eff ective in fighting fires in high rise buildings, ware- houses, and other structures adjacent to open water. Pump will also operate off hydrants. c FIREFLY can supply three fog nozzles simul- taneously or in various combinations. Rear fogger 2500 gpm or two forward fog nozzles 1250 gpm. High velocity discharge generates powerful fog patterns providing effective pro- tective water curtain in case of fire envelop- ment on water, cooling water curtain provides protection to crews boarding vessels or water side structures. ; _; VI a:. r. r - AMPHIBIOUS FIRE APPARATUS Proposed Design CITY OF MIAMI 4 me 1 O 1 ? 3 4 3 clfT Ceeowc ,cage LEGEND Fine Amphibian 33 f t. length; 10 ft. beam, 10 it. height. 19,000 lbs. empty - 30,000 lbs. gross weight 300 hp Cummins Diesel - 4 wheel drive 3 mph land - 10 mph water 3/16 in. These increases are due to unanticipated shortages and inflationary increases in cost. Funds in the amount of $550,000 are available in the 1976 Fire Fighting, Fire Prevention and Rescue Facilities Bond Fund. In addition, this amendment will revise and decrease appropriations for three (3) projects: Fire Station #9, Fire Apparatus Acquisition, Replacements and Modifwcations; and New City Administration Building (due to a revision in the 3.92% interdepartmental service charge). It is requested that this matter be placed on the January 15, 1981 City Commission Agenda, particularly in view of the fact that the Fire Train- ing Facility will be ready to go out for bid in early 1981. cc: Planning Department Finance Department Management & Budget Law Department
