A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING; THE CITY MIANAGEP. TO
ACCEPT A GRANT FROM THE' NATI9NAL ENDOWMENT
FOR THE ARTS FOR A PROJECT ENTITLED "YORUBA/
SPANISH HERITAGE PROGRAM" AND FURTHER AUTHO-
RIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO E`{E:CGTE; THE
NECESSARY IMPLEMENTING CONTRACTS AND AGREF;MENTS
UPON RECEIPT OF THE GRANT.
WHERFAS, the National Endowment for the Arts has offered
the City of Miami a grant award of S9,000 to carry out a "Yoruba/
Spanish Heritage Program": and

Ordinance and Resolution to authorize
acceptance of a Grant from the Nation-
al Endowment for the Arts
Yoruba/Spanish Heritage Program
Subject Legislation
It is recommended that the City Commission
establish a new Trust and Agency Fund en-
titled "Yoruba/Spanish Heritage Program" in
the amount of $15,000., consisting of a
$9,000 grant from the National Endowment for
the Arts and 86,000 from the City of ,Miami's
Fiscal Year 1980-81 hatching Funds for Grants
budget and further recommending that the
City Commission authorize the City Manager
to accent said grant and to execute the nec-
essary implementing contracts and agreements
unon receipt of the grant.
The attached ordinance and resolution will authorize your acceptance of the
Federal grant, written confirmation of which is expected shortly. The above -
mentioned 'rational rndoxment for the Arts grant consists of a $9,000. award
to be matched by $6,000., which has been earmarked for this Purpose within
the City of ?Miami's Fiscal Year 1980-81 ;'atching Funds for Grants budget..for
the Yoruba/S^anis}i }ieritage Program to be conducted 1,rimarily in "larch 1981
at various locations throughout the City of Miami.
The Yoruba culture on^.inated in southwest Nigeria and migrated to the Carib-
bean and more recently to the United States through the descendents of slaves
brought to Cuha and Brazil.. The Yoruba culture is still a way of life for
many blacks in the Caribbean countries and its language is spoken by more
than 6 million reople. The Yoruba/Spanish Heritage Program will trace this
common heritage of many Hispanic, Caribbean, and American Blacks through
performing arts programs and educational seminars.
