Gunman tips frightened getaway driver $50
Who but a bandit bold and
brash — with a touch of mis-
guided class — would steal
money at gunpoint, commandeer
a van for his getaway, then slip
its frightened driver $50 for his
trouble and his gasoline?
Metro police don't know the
robber's identity. They're not re-
leasing his description or how
much cash he took after pistol-
whipping and disarming a secu-
rity guard and terrorizing tellers
at 2:45 p.m. yesterday at the
Home -Savings Assocation on S.
Federal Highway.
The robber, perhaps nervous,
fired one shot into the S&L's
ceiling, but no one was injured.
Clutching money, the handlt
walked out the front door and
stepped In front of a van owned
by the South Dade News Leader.
Homestead's 15,000-circulation
daily newspaper.
"He jumped in front of my ve-
hicle. I didn't see his weapon at
the time," said the van's driver,
International
firm chargF
who didn't want his name used
because the robber's still on the
loose.
"All he said to me was 'Hit IN'
and I did. I didn't look at him
and couldn't describe him. All I
saw was a weapon in my face."
The getaway ride took the
gunman to SW 284th Street and
142nd Avenue, and as he left the
van, he flipped $50 to the driver
and scampered away, saying,
"For your trouble, and for your
gas."
