REFFRENCES Discussion for March 12th
City Commission Meeting
ENCLOSURES
It is recommended that horse stables, groom's
residence and canine training facilities for
use by the City of Miami Police Department,
be constructed in Bicentennial Park.
The City of Miami's, Department of Police Mounted Patrol, stables are
presently located at the Dade County Stockade. The horses must be
transported to each patrol area; three downtown, one each to Coconut
Grove, Allapattah and Decorator's Row, resulting in 66 miles of travel
per day. If the stables were located in the downtown area, the total
transportation would be 18 miles. This would save approximately 124
man days per year as well as considerable vehicle maintenance costs.
Bicentennial Park would provide the desired downtown location the
Police Department is seeking. With the stables located within the
park, police visibility would be increased resulting in a decrease
in crime in the area. The public would have a greater sense of
security and utilize the park more to its potential. Locating the
police stables in the park would confirm the City's commitment to
increased security, in the Central City and the Bayfront Park system.
Bicentennial consists of 33 acres of land between Biscayne Bay and
Biscayne Boulevard. The proposed stables facility would require approxi-
mately two acres. The park could easily accommodate these needs. The
new facility would consist of:
--stable building for 10 horses
--attached efficiency apartment for mounted groom
--limited training area for the Canine Detail
The proposed site plan allows for a compatible coexistence between the
stable facility and park users, yet allows maximum security for the
stable area.
