Fosmoen City Manager i MEMORANDUM DATE February 27, 1981 FILE FROM Brenda Williamson, Coordinator sua.,ccT Report on Selection of Artist Arts in Public Places Committee for Little Havana Community Center .ZL '/ This report is a continuation of my report, dated March 20, 1980, addressed to Joseph R. Grassie, City Manager at the time. Since March 1980, following the approval of the Arts in Public Places Committee report by the City Manager and by the City Commission, the following art works were contracted for to be placed in the Little Havana Community Center, located at 970 SW First Street, Miami, Florida: 1. Four drawings of street scenes, executed and in place by Fred Albert, for an amount of $2,000. 2. A large weaving, currently being fabricated, by Arlyn Ende, for an amount of $6,500. The total budget for art work for this project was $14,763 and with the expenditure of the above amounts, a balance of $6,260 (rounded) was available for other works of art. The Arts in Public Places Committee have considered the works of numerous artists since March for appropriate works of art for the Little Havana Community Center whose cost would not exceed the remaining art budget balance. On November 20, 1980, the Committee reviewed the works of some 30 artists mainly by slides of their works and presentations by five artists, including works and slides by the Scull sisters. On January 22, 1981, the Committee decided that the street scene presently hanging in the corridor of the City Hall at Dinner Key would be an appropriate acquisition for placement in the Meeting Room of the Little Havana Community Center, provided that its cost was within the budget. The Scull sisters were contacted and they advised that the selling price was $4,800. .1 196 "SUP►''TIv': 0 U %, I E.1.\t i FOLLOW Richard L. Fosmoen Little Havana February 27, 1981 Page 2 On February 19, 1981, the Committee agreed that the price was reasonable and passed a motion recommending that the City purchase the work for the amount of $4,800 and that an amount not to exceed $1,200 be used in addition to cover the work with plexiglass and to insure that it was properly hung and secure. The Arts in Public Places Committee recommends that you approve this report and submit it for discussion at the next regular meeting of the City Commission.
