Highway Patrol Assistance Task Force
It is recommended that the City of Miami allocate
$150,000.00 from the General Fund, Special Programs
and Accounts, Public Safety Contingent Fund, for
the purpose of providing funds for the City of
Miami's contribution to the Florida Highway Patrol
Assistance Task Force.
During the City Commission meeting of December 17, 1980, the Commission indicated
its consent to the City of Miami's participation in the temporary assignment of
Florida Highway Patrol Troopers to this area. This participation involved the
State of Florida, Metropolitan Dade County, the City of Miami Beach, and the
City of Miami with the State picking up 50" of the overall cost, Metropolitan
Dade County providing 33.3 of the cost, Miami beach paying 1.5°0 of the total
and the City of Miami providing 15.212 of the Task Force's costs.
During the months of January and February, the City of Miami was assigned 30
Florida Highway Patrol Troopers from the total assignment to this area of 100
Troopers. Reports, from the Miami Police Department, indicate that the temporary
assignment of these troopers dramatically reduced the delay time for accident
calls, and released City of Miami Police officers from accident assignments thus
permitting a more rapid assignment of calls for police service to our officers.
The original participation plan anticipated a City of Miami contribution of
$36,000 for each of the months that 30 Troopers were assigned to the City of
Miami. This total for the three months would be $108,000.00. There has been
some discussion regarding a continuation of Trooper assistance beyond the original
90-day period, and the $42,000.00 amount that raises the total participation cost
to $150,000.00 is in anticipation of this continued Trooper assignment.
The attached Resolution will permit the City Hanauer to fulfill the City of Miami's
commitment related to the Highway Patrol Task Force.
