Fosmoen City Manager -coon.+ Carl Kern, Director Department of Parks Vebruary 24, 1981 Report of Miami Memorial Committee Meeting, February 9, 1981 Pursuant to request of the City Commission, the Miami Memorial Committee met at 3:00 PM, Monday, February 9, 1981, to consider and recommend upon the following: (1) Renaming of New World Center Bicentennial Park to John Lennon New World Park Mr. Mason Loika and Mr. Rick Shaw made a presentation to the Memorial Committee in substantiation of their belief of the relevance of renaming the Park for John Lennon. Upon their departure, the Committee then held lengthy discussion on the proposal. The Chairman reported the feelings of four members whom she had spoken with and who could not attend the meeting because of illness or being out of town. The feelings of members present gore noted and the following recommendation was subsequently made to the Cite Commission: The Miami Memorial Committee recommends that there be no change in the name of New World Center Bicentennial Park. The Committee believes that the existing name is of greater historical significance, marking the Nation's 200th Birthday as well as that of the Park's development and formal opening. The Committee suggests, and wholeheartedly supports, the scheduling of a "John Lennon hay Concert" in New Worid Center Bicentennial Park, whereby proceeds could be used for music scholarships in John Lennon's honor. (2) Naming of various buildings comprising the Little Havana Community Center Complex for: Manolo Reboso, Manual Artime Buesa, and "Thomas Cruz The Miami Memorial Committee recommends deferral of the above actions, with consideration bein:; given to their also includin, other names for study and recommendation, in order to insure the utmost appro- priateness of the subject buildings' identification into the future Page 1 of 2 R Aithatd L, Fostnoen February 24, 1981 The Committee felt that it would be of benefit in the meantime to codify the guidelines they use in making recommendations of this nature, for review and comment by the City Commission. Mrs. Dorothy Field, Mrs. Mignon `•ledrano, and Dr. Thelma Peters will be preparing a document for the Commission's review. (3) Naming of the "annex strip" runnine parallel to South Bayshore Drive between SW '%th Avenue and McFarlane Drive for former Senator Kenneth Meyers. The Miami Memorial Committee recommends deferral of the above action, with consideration being given to their also including other names for study and recommendation relating to pioneer families of Coconut Grove, in order to insure the utmost appropriateness of the subject park property's identification into the future. There were six members of the Committee present at the February 9, 1981) meeting: Mrs. Robert A. Burton, Chairman Mrs. John E. Culmer Mrs. Dorothy .Jenkins Field Mrs. Mignon \Iedrano Dr. Thelma Peters Mr. Wayne Withers It was reported that firs. Alice C. Wainwright and Mr. Frank Stearns have requested that their names be moved from active membership of the committee, to that of a consultant basis.
