Report of Miami Memorial Committee
Meeting, February 9, 1981
Pursuant to request of the City Commission, the Miami Memorial Committee
met at 3:00 PM, Monday, February 9, 1981, to consider and recommend upon
the following:
(1) Renaming of New World Center Bicentennial Park to John Lennon
New World Park
Mr. Mason Loika and Mr. Rick Shaw made a presentation to the
Memorial Committee in substantiation of their belief of the
relevance of renaming the Park for John Lennon. Upon their
departure, the Committee then held lengthy discussion on the
proposal. The Chairman reported the feelings of four members
whom she had spoken with and who could not attend the meeting
because of illness or being out of town. The feelings of
members present gore noted and the following recommendation
was subsequently made to the Cite Commission:
The Miami Memorial Committee recommends that there be no change
in the name of New World Center Bicentennial Park. The Committee
believes that the existing name is of greater historical significance,
marking the Nation's 200th Birthday as well as that of the Park's
development and formal opening.
The Committee suggests, and wholeheartedly supports, the scheduling
of a "John Lennon hay Concert" in New Worid Center Bicentennial
Park, whereby proceeds could be used for music scholarships in
John Lennon's honor.
(2) Naming of various buildings comprising the Little Havana Community
Center Complex for: Manolo Reboso, Manual Artime Buesa, and "Thomas
Cruz
The Miami Memorial Committee recommends deferral of the above actions,
with consideration bein:; given to their also includin, other names
for study and recommendation, in order to insure the utmost appro-
priateness of the subject buildings' identification into the future
