TO SUPPORT SINGLE MEMBER DISTRICT ELECTIONS;
FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO FORWARD
COPIES OF THE HEREIN RESOLUTION TO CERTAIN
INDIVIDUALS.
WHEREAS, the principle of single member legislative dil8tri tg:_
has long been advocated by leaders In the field of governtnenti
including former Governor Reuben Askew; and
WHEREAS, reapportionment of state legislatures, county commis"
sions and school boards upon the basis of single member districts
has also been advocated by leaders in government; and
WHEREAS, recent litigation in the Federal courts has resulted
in the requirement of district elections in order that minorities
indiverse units of the population be given the opportunity to elect
their representatives from districts rather than at -large; and
WHEREAS, with a social structure of blacks, hispanics, and
whites, and with the economic structure of Dade County being
unusually diverse: industrial, financial, tourism, agricultural,
aviation, commercial fishing and export-import, all interests may
have an indirect voice in their government but none of whom has a
direct method of electing their governmental representatives as
defined by Federal law; and
WHEREAS, having single member district elections as the
basis for electing the Florida Legislature is considered to be411:,,
immediate goal which is in the best interest of the citizenry of
tile City of Miami;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Senators and Representatives of the Florida'
State Legislature are hereby strongly urged to support single
member district elections,
Section 2. The City Clerk is hereby directed to forward
copies of the herein Resolution to the legislative delegation
