Knight Intl Cent: r� It is recommended that the proposed R-solution be adopted authorizing the City Manager to enter into the y attached agreement with Roberto M. �37yr ,t 'Tarafa for his services as a Project Engineer, in connection with the, = construction of the Citec. of :Miami 9 rs University of Miami James L. Knight International Center, with funds)t _ therefor to be expended from the i Convention Center and Parking Garage Bond Funds. The Conference Center Department has a critical need for a Project Engineer to assist the City's Project Director in completing construc- tion of the City of Nliami/University of Miami James L. Knight Interna- tional Center. As you are aware the City's Convention Center and Parking Garacte are under construction and are scheduled for substantial completion at the end of April 1982. It will probably take several more months for final finishes and start up "s'.iakedown" before all facilities are fully operational. An enormous amount of work must be done to meet the City's commitment to complete the project on schedule and within the budget. In addition to the approximately $56 million under contract for basic construction, design work is underway for almost $4.0 million in interior finishes, furniture, fixtures, equipment (FF&E) and site work around the complex:. 'These must be bid separately to the City and are required for the completion of the project. In addition there is over $1 million in allowances in the existing construction contracts which require review and approval by the City. The project also requires coordination with the adjacent Riverwalk construction and interfacing of the privately constructed fiyatt Hotel and Trade Center Office Building. The Project Engineer must be trained as an architect or building construction, civil engineer and have local construction experience. IR= Fortunately, a well qualified person, Roberto Miguel Tarafa, has been found. He is working on a project which is nearing completion and is now available to work on this project. Iie has an architectural degree from the University of :Miami and is registered as a licensed architect and is licensed as a general contractor in the State of Florida. His experience in the construction industry is exceilent and: his professional experience is particularly well suited for this project. He is specially experienced as a specialist in construction administra- tion and cost control. He is also familiar with City of :Miami procedures. While in college, he worked for the City's Department of Parks and Recreation. Later, he worked for a minority contractor as his project supervisor on the renovation of the City's Coconut Grove Exhibition Center project at Dinner Key. Unclosed is a copy of his resume. It is recom.rended that the City Manager be authorized to engage Roberto A Tarafa under contract for his services as a Project Engineer for the Convention Center.
