Second Interamerican Sugar We
Seminar
1
I hereby transmit a request that the City of Miami participate in the Second
Interamerican Sugar Cane Seminar to be held in Miami this year.
As you know, Florida is the number one sugar producing state in the Union. The
sugar industry means well over one billion dollars to the economy of our state.
Today, the center of the sugar cane world, academically, is still Louisiana, but
with the advent of the growth of sugar in the economic sphere of Florida, all of
us should try harder to bring the world sugar cane producing countries to Miami
in the same manner they today go to Houston and Tulsa for oil technology.
Last year, the First Interamerican Sugar Cane Seminar was totally funded by the
private sector, with a budget of $60,000 and over 200 people in attendance from
all of the sugar producing countries in the hemisphere. This year, they have a
$75,000 budget, around300 people are expected to attend, and the theme will be
'Sugar Cane Pests'.
Although it is my opinion that this certainly belongs more in the realm of the
State, the City of Miami is a great beneficiary, and in the same way we sponsor
the Hemispheric Congress of Latin Chambers of Commerce meetings, bankers meetings,
Insurance Exchange, hemispheric medical congresses, Trade Fairs of the Americas,
Telecommunications Conferences, etc., I can think of no other industry with a
greater multiplier in South Florida than the sugar industry, which we should support
as the basis for economic expansion and development in the City of Miami.
I fully support this request and would like the matter to be placed on the agenda
for discussion at the July 23 Commission meeting.
By copy of this memorandum I am requesting that Julio Castano and his department
fully investigate this request and report to us by July 23.
