HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-81-0738� � a HLr`JULUTIUM NU• a — s !7 V A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER '> TO ACCEPT A GRANT FOR A CULTURAL PROGRAM ENTITLED: "SYNERGETICS" FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES AND FURTHER AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE THE NEtgSSARY IMPLEMENTING CONTRACTS AND AGREE MENTS UPON RECEIPT OF SAID GRANT. WHEREAS, the Cultural Division of the Department of Leisure Services has developed a program based upon a youth cultural -study of Miami's diverse ethnic heritages, entitled: "SYNERGETICS"; and WHEREAS, SYNERGETICS is the subject of a $59,354 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA.- Section 1. The City Manager is hereby authorized to accept a grant for a cultural program entitled: "SYNERGETICS" from the National Endowment for the Humanities and to execute the necessary implementing contracts and agreements upon receipt of the grant. The Department of Leisure Services, Cultural Division, has developed and planned a cultural and humanities program based on a youth -oriented study of Miami diverse and complex ethnic heritages. The program, entitled SYNERGETICS will employ the services of the Cultural Division staff, four part-time humanities and publishing consultants from the community, and twelve part-time certified public instructors. 150 public high school students will be involved in researching, investigating, composing and editing articles with a cultural or humanities theme in three languages, English, Spanish and "Patois" (Haitian). Over 30,000 students and com- munity people will receive the publication. Published articles will cover multi -ethnic characteristics, interviews with community leaders, transcription of oral folk tales, the tracing of family heritages, exam- ination of certain folk customs and current problems facing Miami's youth. Articles submitted will be reviewed prior to publication by the consul- tants and the Cultural Division staff. The bi-monthly publication will be in the style and format of "Tropic". SYNERCETICS will be circulated throughout the Dade County School System, the Miami -Dade Public Library System and community organizations. Small scholarship grants ($500. total) and awards of merit will be presented to the ten most distinguished stu- dents after selection by the staff and consultants. SYNERGETICS has received formal endorsement from the Youth Programs Div- ision of the National Endowment for the Humanities and will W the subject of a grant with a budget totaling $59,354.
