It is anticipated that the total cost for these repairs will not exceed $30,000. The funds are available within this Department's current budget. The Police Department is experiencing vehicle shortages to the extent that proper citywide police coverage cannot be accomplished. At the present time there are approximately 38 police unit wrecks awaiting repair. I am at a loss to explain the drastic increase in the number of police units involved in accidents. However, the automotive body work on present day vehicles, especially police vehicles, is considerably more complex than in prior years. Every effort will be made to obtain multiple estimates for all repairs. However, in some instances the ability to complete the repairs in the shortest period of time will be the determining factor. It is my intention to distribute the repairs to several vendors so that a minimum time will elapse for their repair and return. I am at this time pro- ceeding with the repairs as instructed by you during a recent telephone conversation.
