Background: A group of citizens sent a petition to the City Commission (attached), requesting that Fern Isle Park located at NW Und Avenue and 14th Street be renamed to Nelson L. Adams Park. Mr. Adams is the retired principal of Dunbar Elementary School and is a recognized educator and civic leader in the Miami area. The Committee Chairperson, Mrs. Burton, emphasized that the Memorial Comn ittee's decision was no reflection on Mr. Adams' contrib.itions and recommended that perhaps a more _ appropriate gesture would be to rename a school ,a honor of Mr. Adams' outstanding achievements. CK/vb g Enclosure -i !•I Hon. Maurice A. Ferre -2- June 10, 1981 The Advisory Board has decided by a vote of 5 against/3 for, not to recommend the program as presented. We do, however, recommend quality housing with emphasis on homeownership. We understand that under• the Reagan Administration, 1 programs of this nature are experiencing an unfortunate demise. In the event the program survives, our community would be most interested in reviewing a plan which will entail the betterment of the lives of the residents of the ! neighborhood we so richly love. i Respectfully yours, Willie Calhoun, Chairperson Model City Community Development Advisory Board cc: Rev.
