ENCLOSURES:
The Department of Public Works recommends
CA- the adoption of a resolution authorizing
_ h an increase in the scope of the contract
Z3 in an amount of $40,000 for the SOUTHERN
;o DRAINAGE PROJECT E-51, allocating the
additional $40,000 from the "Storm Sewer
G.O. Bond Fund".
New buildings are under construction along the entire length of
the north side of NW 22 Street between 17 and 21 Avenues. City
Ordinances require builders to construct or repair the existing
sidewalks and curb and gutter in connection with the building
construction. In this case, the builders (3) have agreed to
exceed the requirement and construct pavement in front of the
curb and gutter if the City will construct the drainage that
must precede the repaving. Existing utilities prohibits con-
struction of drainage on the south side of the street.
The only method we have to do the drainage work in the short
• time available is to include it in an existing contract.
Southern Drainage Project E-51 now under construction contains
work identical to the drainage work proposed for NW 22 Street.
The successful bidder on the project, who was low by $92,000 on
a $355,771 contract (26%) has agreed to do the additional work
at his contract prices. VTe believe the cost, t70,000, is lower
than we can achieve by any other means of doing the work, and
recommend acceptance of both the builder's and contractor's offers.
We estimate that we will be receiving $63,000+ worth of addi-
tional improvements from the builders. The ultimate result will
be that the City will receive the rebuilding of the north one-
half of the street (0.38 miles) at a very low cost. We believe
we can obtain the rebuilding of the south one-half of the street
similarly within the next few years.
