ON HIS INSTALLATION AS CITY COMMISSIONER: "I feel proud of the support received from the whole community in this election. (Air,victory is the victory of the whole community. "It is my intention to ask for the support of those that did not vote for me, so that we can work in harmony for a true representation. "President Lincoln told us tTat "a house divided can not stand". Miami divided cannot stand and.prosper. "We seem to be playing into the hands of an Old Roman military axiom "divide and conquer". Our common enemies: crone, lack of housing for the poor and aged, t lack of jobs for our young people and the lack of credibility will conquer us, if wo do not. unite. "Other problems face us. This society and community will stand and prosper if we work together. "we have to rescue our values, our dignity anu our courayu an;u nunor. These are : the ideals that inspired my candidacy; these are ideals shared by the people of Miami. — "This is why I would like to proclaim the N(l'S ,1, ., "+ Du:uc:.• i .iiiity , in the history of the Miami City Commission, especially in our Group 4. i "To further these ideals of the "Decade of Credibility" I would like to ratify today three measures I will enact before the end of this year: I will personally donate my first year's Commission salary to Variety k Children's Hospital, an area institution serving the children and families of our community regardless of race, creed, nationality, or financial worth. "2.- In early December I will bring forth a motion entitled FOR A CLEAN MIAMI, 4 wherein I will.propose a Citizens Information Campaign for the sake of a clean city. That same day I'll make an appeal for five thousand students to become involved in a clean-up project by distributing literature and petitioning r fellow citizens as well as elected officials for a cleaner city, at not k cost to our taxpayers. Today, however, I direct my message for a cleaner city of the local radio and television stations, to the newspapers, and to civic associations. On behalf of the thousands of voters I have personally visited during my campaign I appeal you to undertake a public service campaign promoting a clean Miami. 3/= I propose periodic meeting of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the Latin American Chamber of Commerce, the InterAmerican Chamber of Commerce, the Miami -Dade Chamber of corruneroe, and all other area chambers of commerce and civic institutions, for the purpose of bettering community relations among the diverse groups that call Miami home. Ladies and gentlemen: I believe that I can reinstate DIGNITY, COURAGE AND HONOR to the Group IV of the City of Miami Commission in this Decade of Credibility, and I believe this community will hear my pledge to work for a united Miami during the Decade of Credibility with dignity, courage and honor for our future. 3 City of "Miami Commission November 12, 1981 Mr. Mayor, Fellow Commissioners, Citizens of Miami: During my campaign I was in constant contact with citizens that normally have very little dealings with City Hall. Most of them sh;ired several concerns that demand a quick response. Crime of course is our main worry, but in order to i tackle that problem we need o coordinated effort of City, County, State, and Fodernl agencies and departments. One problem that the City ran h;indle, 111d onr that 1 promised the people would be of top priority, is making the city as clean as possible. There are three areas I would like to look into: 1. Using funds from the private segment we would like to take the first steps to start a public relations campaign for the purpose of educating the citezens, especially the new arrivals in the community, in the ways of proper way of garbage, litter, and trash control and prevention. 2. Due to the many complaints we have received, I would like for the City Manager to contact the proper department and inquire as to the nature of the problem: why it's and how we can correct it. This is mostly evident in the low inclome areas and in the inner city. 3. In conjuction with the above items, I would like to set aside a .:ay in December of this year with the intent on making a proclamation for a " CLEAN`'- UP DAY 11. This effort mould be :i huhl is service campaign, and I would call on thousands of students to participate by distributing literature and helping to carry the message that we want cl ,an str^ets, rrco of garbage and tr•i;h in all the n•:_•l;l,,rh,.ls o'" 1i;tni . Thank you. Item by Mr. Demetrio Perez, Jr. Commissioner, Group 4 •
