HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-82-0060RESOLUTION NO. 8 2 m 6 0 A RESOLUTION INSTRUCTING THE CITY CLERK TO SEND A TELE- GRAM TO PRESIDENT REAGAN REQUESTING THAT HE IMMEDIATELY INVESTIGATE THE REASONS FOR THE IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT'S DEPORTATION OF ANDRES RODRIGUEZ HERNANDEZ, A YOUNG MAN WHOSE ONLY CRIME WAS SEEKING FREEDOM, AND REQUESTING THAT THE PRESIDENT IMMEDIATELY SEND TO THE CONGRESS A PROPOSAL FOR A NEW IMMIGRATION STATUTE THAT WOULD EFFEC- TIVELY REPEAL THE 1980 IMMIGRATION ACT AND FURTHER REQUEST- ING THAT, IN THE INTERIM, HE EXERCISE HIS ADMINISTRATIVE POWERS TO OVERRIDE ANY SUCH FUTURE DEPORTATION ACTION ON THE PART OF THE IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT SO AS TO ALLOW THE COUNTRY TO RETURN TO THE POSTURE OF GRANTING ASYLUM TO THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED BY COMMUNIST POLITICAL REGIMES IN THE -WORLD, THEREBY FOLLOWING A POLICY WHICH HAS BEEN TRADITIONAL SINCE THE ADMINISTRATION OF PRESIDENT EISENHOWER. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The City Clerk is hereby instructed to send a telegram to President Reagan requesting that he immediately investigate the rea- sons for the Immigration Department's deportation of Andres Rodriguez Hernandez, a young man whose only crime was seeking freedom, and further requesting that the President immediately send to the Congress a proposal for a new Immigration Statute that would effectively repeal the 1980 Immigration Act and further requesting that, in the interim, he exercise his administrative powers to override any such -future deportation action on the part of the Immigration Department so as to allow the Country to return to the posture of granting asylum to those who are oppr^ssed by communist political regimes in the world, thereby following a policy which has been traditional since the administration of President Eisenhower.
