Gibbs sponsor of the Miami Jackson High School Close-up Committee. As you can see, this is a worthwhile project for which she is seeking assis- tance from our City. Please schedule for her an appearance in the February llth regular commission meeting so that she may have the opportunity to present her formal request to the City Commission siuewr.s s 82-I47 MIAMI JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL 1751 N.W. 36TH STREET MIAMI, FLORIDA 33142 "THE SCHOOL THAT CARES" PERCY L. OLIVER DR. LEONARD M. BRITTON PRINCIPAL SUPT. DADE COUNTY SCHOOLS Dec. 9, 1981 Commissioner Perez, As sponsor of the Miami Jackson Senior High School Close -Up Committee, I am writing to request your assistance in our efforts to send motivated young people to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Washington Close -Up. The Washington Close -Up experience includes opportunities for our youth tli have personal contact with their Senators, Representatives, Supreme Court Justices, White House officials, high ranking officers in the Pentagon, State Department personnel and numerous other cogent representatives of various interest groups and government agencies, as current national and international situations warrant. Such an experience is obviously optimily desirable as an impetus to motivate our young people to seek leadership positions within our community. Unfortunately, the cost of such'a program is prohibitive for most of the students who attend Miami Jackson Senior High School. We would like to see a significant number of deserving students from our various minority groups benefit from this outstanding educational opportunity. 'Therefore, we would greatly appreciate any contribution you could make to help offset the cost of the trip. This year's Close -Up program requires us to pay $647,00 per student. Inasmuch as we are attempting to send 25 students, your assistance would be invaluable. We sincerely hope you will find our program worthy of your consideration and support. Contributions both organizational or personal can be made by check to the Miami Jackson Close -Up Fund. We will be happy to supply you with a Board of Public Instruction receipt to verify our non-profit status should you choose to utilize your contribution as a tax deduction. Sincerely, Zeta B . Gibbs Sponsor INV E ST U-1 TH E-4 OF YOUR COFAPAUHTY. "CLOSE UP provided me with the opportunity to become involved. It proved to me that government is real, that politicans arejust people and that I could active- ly participate in the political process. " Former CLOSE UP Student What Is Close Up? CLOSE UP is an opportunity for high school students and teachers to put aside their textbooks and travel to Washington, D.C. to experience government in action. Students engage in frank discussions with senators, representatives, White House and executive branch officials, lobbyists, reporters, and other newsmakers, and develop a richer under- standing of the political process. CLOSE UP is observing and understanding the com- plexities of living government. Join A Community Partnership CLOSE UP organizes its program around 38 communities across the nation. Because of the partnership of government, business and education, high school students from a variety of backgrounds are able to take an active part in the CLOSE UP program. If you choose to contribute toward a student's tuition, you will be joining your community's partnership; your contribution will be an investment in your community. Return On Investment CLOSE UP students return home with a better understanding of, and greater apprecia- tion for, their government. Encouraged by their experience, many students and teachers have developed their own state and local CLOSE UP programs. CLOSE UP students become active citizens who understand and take an interest in community affairs. As we look ahead to the challenges facing this country, the work of the Close Up Foundation in preparing young Americans for active citizenship is the best investment democracy can make in itself.
