Officer of the Month
December 1981
Kenneth I. Harms
Chief of Police
The Miami Police Department has selected Officers Pedro Saavedra
and Rodney Barreto as its Most Outstanding Officers of the Month
for December 1981.
Officers Saavedra and Barreto are assigned to this department's
Patrol Task Force, a highly specialized unit that participates
in undercover operations and stake -outs and also conducts our
highly successful Operation Crime Sweep Program.
Last month, in just 16 working days, these two young officers
carried out a total of 28 felony and 38 misdemeanor arrests.
Fifteen of those felony apprehensions involved potentially
life -threatening situations, including 10 arrests for carrying
concealed firearms; 2 for aggravated assault; and 3 for auto
theft, following a high speed chase.
Officers Saavedra and Barreto have been instrumental in the
success of Operation Crime S;,reep, an accelerated enforcement
program designed to rid Miami's streets of undesirables. On
one recent Crime Sl•:eep, they were responsible for 22 of the 40
arrests made that evening.
Officer Saavedra, 22, is a two-year Miami Police veteran who
was assigned to the Patrol Section before joining the Task Force.
In his brief career he has earned 12 departmental commendations
and three nominations for I•iost Outstanding Officer of the Month.
He has won that award once and been runner-up once.
Officer Barreto, 24, is also a two-year veteran. He has 20
commendations and two Officer of the Month nominations; he was
selected once for that award.
j Please advise my office of the date and time of the City
Commission's presentation of the Certificate of Appreciation
to Officers Saavedra and Barreto.
