Harms Chief of Police The Miami Police Department has selected Officers Pedro Saavedra and Rodney Barreto as its Most Outstanding Officers of the Month for December 1981. Officers Saavedra and Barreto are assigned to this department's Patrol Task Force, a highly specialized unit that participates in undercover operations and stake -outs and also conducts our highly successful Operation Crime Sweep Program. Last month, in just 16 working days, these two young officers carried out a total of 28 felony and 38 misdemeanor arrests. Fifteen of those felony apprehensions involved potentially life -threatening situations, including 10 arrests for carrying concealed firearms; 2 for aggravated assault; and 3 for auto theft, following a high speed chase. Officers Saavedra and Barreto have been instrumental in the success of Operation Crime S;,reep, an accelerated enforcement program designed to rid Miami's streets of undesirables. On one recent Crime Sl•:eep, they were responsible for 22 of the 40 arrests made that evening. Officer Saavedra, 22, is a two-year Miami Police veteran who was assigned to the Patrol Section before joining the Task Force. In his brief career he has earned 12 departmental commendations and three nominations for I•iost Outstanding Officer of the Month. He has won that award once and been runner-up once. Officer Barreto, 24, is also a two-year veteran. He has 20 commendations and two Officer of the Month nominations; he was selected once for that award. j Please advise my office of the date and time of the City Commission's presentation of the Certificate of Appreciation to Officers Saavedra and Barreto.
