A RESOLUTION STRONGLY URGING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO GRANT PERMANENT STATUS TO THE NICARAGUAN REFUGEES LIVING IN MIAMI AND OTHER PARTS OF THE UNITED STATES WHO HAVE BEEN FORCED TO FLEE THEIR HOMELAND AND COME TO THE UNITED STATES DUE TO THE POLITICAL SITUATION CREATED BY THE TOTALITARIAN AND COMMUNISTIC GOVERNMENT OF NICARAGUA, SAID PERMANENT STATUS LEGITIMIZING THEIR RIGHT TO WORK AND PURSUIT OF A NORMAL LIFE IN THE UNITED STATES; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO FOR- WARD COPIES OF THE HEREIN RESOLUTION TO PRESIDENT REAGAN AND TO THE HEAD OF THE U.S. IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION SERVICE. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The Federal Government is hereby strongly urged to grant permanent status to the Nicaraguan refugees living in Miami and other parts of the United States who have been forced to flee their homeland and come to the United States due to the political situation created by the totalitarian and communistic government of Nicaragua. Section 2. The grant of permanent status to the Nicaraguan refugees would legitimize their right to work and pursuit of a normal life in the United States. Section 3. The C=i:y Clerk is hereby directed to forward copies of the herein resolution to President Reagan and to the head of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. Govt. to grant permanent status to Nicaraguan Refugees Pursuant to my motion at today's Commission meeting, following is an abstract of the main points that should be incorporated into the text of the resolution. 1. That the City of Miami supports the ages -old principle of political asylum, as set forth by tradition and by International Law. 2. That the Nicaraguan refugees living in Miami and other parts of the United States, have been forced to come to this country due to the political situation created by the totalitarian and Communist government of Nicaragua. 3. That due to the political nature of their case, the Inmigration and Naturalization Service grant them permanent status in this country, and thus legalize their means to work and pursue a normal life. 4. That we send a copy of the resolution to President Reagan as we have done in matters dealing with the status of Haitian and Cuban refugees. 82-203 q March 18, 1982 R A! PH G.
