The Honorable
Maurice A. Ferret

Dear Mayor Ferre:

National Council for
Interr•atlnn.Si Vljlt ,'S
CIV, the COUNCIL FOR INTERNATIONAL VISITORS OF GREATER
MIAMI, INC., is in serious trouble. Cutbacks in federal
funding have plunged CIV into a severe financial crisis.
This crisis should be the concern of the entire community
at a time when Miami is so deeply concerned with "its
image of the 801s". Because it has been proven that CIV
is an essential component of that image.
An international city is not formed by industrial and
economic development, multinational companies, or Edge
Act banks alone. Required are the efforts of individual
concerned citizens.... Miami "natives" performing a myriad
of subtle services with, and for the people of other
nations. This type of personal interaction is what
nurtures true internationalism.
CIV, founded in 1957, has been effectively doing that job
for the past 25 years. With a group of volunteers, a
limited staff and a modest budget CIV has extended Miami's
welcome to over 55,000 serious-minded visitors from all
parts of the world with very positive results.
As Miami develops into a great international center of
trade and commerce, CIV's contributions are more essential
than ever. But to survive and grow, CIV needs itiziiiediate county -wide
support.
More specifically, CIV needs the financial support of the
City of Miami. With your help CIV can overcome its current
crisis, and continue performing its vital role in helping
to shape our international community.
Therefore, in the name of CIV President, Mrs. William
Sottile and its Board of Directors I would like to request
to appear before the City Commission at its scheduled
meeting of Thursday, 1 April, 1982 to present our case,
and for consideration of this appeal for support.
'ncerely
. I
