Officer of the Month
February 1982
The Miami Police Department has selected Officer Jacquelyn Wynn as
its Most Outstanding Officer of the Month for February 1982.
Officer Wynn was responsible for the arrest of a teenager minutes
after he murdered a teacher on the grounds of Edison Middle School.
The attack took place the afternoon of January 12th, when the
suspect, 17-year-old Steven Holmes, who was trespassing -on school
grounds, was confronted by teacher Francisco Walker. As Mr. Walker
escorted Holmes off school property, the offender turned and
stabbed the teacher in the chest, killing him.
When the incident took place Officer Wynn was several blocks away
making a truancy apprehension. She was among several police
officers to race to the school in the moments following the attack.
At the scene Officer Wynn got a description of the offender; she
immediately recognized him as Steven Holmes, whom she knew because
she had arrested him last November for trespassing at the same
school. Officer Wynn rushed to Holmes' house on N.W. 47th Terrace,
where she learned he had changed clothes and was enroute to another
nearby school. Minutes later, based on Officer Wynn's information,
the offender was located and arrested.
Officer Wynn, 31, is a member of the department's Juvenile/Missing
Persons Detail. She graduated from the Police Academy just one
year ago. Prior to her present assignment she worked in the
Patrol Section. During her brief career Officer Wynn has earned
five departmental commendations, including a personal citation from
the chief of police. She has also received two letters of
commendation from citizens she assisted. During the past Christmas
season, Officer Wynn was instrumental in the success of Operation
Holiday Sweep, a concerted police effort to rid the streets of
undesirables.
Please advise my office of the date and time of the City Commission's
presentation of the Certificate of Appreciation to Officer Wynn.
