The inception of the City of Miami Youth Baseball Academies League has
given credence to the possibility of Miami having their own "little
world series." This new league has been formed with nine (9) baseball
academies, consisting of 405 boys, between.the ages of 9-15, in cooper-
ation with the City of Miami, Department of Recreation.
On May 3, 1982 at the Miami Baseball Stadium the inaugural game will be
played prior to the regularly scheduled Marlins' game. This will begin
the season which will culminate with an international world series
starting after August 15, 1982. The University of Miami has offered
Mark Light field for the August tournament. Teams from Mexico, Panama,
Argentina, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Colombia, and possibly Japan will vie
for our new world cup. There is a possibility of having cable televi-
sion tape the game to be shown throughout this hemisphere. This type
of youth -oriented activity receiving international exposure will defi-
nitely help restore Miami's image as an international sports center.
Chairman of this league is "Bobby" Maduro, formerly of the Baseball
Commissioner's Office and respected throughout the world of sports. He
will be working in close coordination with the Recreation Department
staff to insure the success of this program.
We will incur supplemental expenses of room and meals for the visiting
teams who will pay for transportation to and from Miami. Other costs
will include baseballs, equipment, umpires and officials. An estimate
of $10,000 will be needed to offset tournament expenses. However, gate
receipts may make this event self sustaining in ensuing years.
Mr. Maduro and Juan Pascual would like to appear at the May 13, 1982
Commission meeting to make a formal request for these funds.
The Recreation Department supports the idea of this unique youth ac-
tivity.
