I Li ( : 4 April 14, 1982 Honorable Mayor Maurice Ferre City of Miami Dear Maurice: In the summer of 1981, and thanks to the support of the City of Miami, the Miami Rowing Club staged the 8th Annual International Regatta. This Regatta, witnessed by officials of the United States Rowing Association, served as a trial of Miami's capabilities to stage a National Championship. Miami, the Marine Stadium course, M.R.C.'s organization and the atmosphere created at the Regatta met with U.S.R.A.'s approval and Miami was awarded the 1982 National Championship in both the Junior and Masters class. They will be conducted in late June and early September respectively and are expected to draw a large crowd of oarsmen and visitors. As you well know, having supported the rowing effort since its beginning in 1974, the National Championship is a climax to long years of hard work and unselfish giving by the community. We must do it right, as if we do, the roots of a classic e- vent that this community will enjoy for years to come will have taken hold. As you may imagine there were doubts and opposition at the National Rowing Convention, yet our enthusiasm and the faith in us manifested by some of the rowing powers prevailed. We have the organization, the know how and the volunteers. Most of all, we have the oarsmen, finely tuned and trained in body and spirit, that will sweat pride into the Miami shirts. Furthermore, we even have a significant amount of funds. Yet, we need help from the City. The attached report spells out what we are going to do and what we need. It is important that these funds be granted early in May for we need to start work soon. (1) 82-386 M'01L%1M1U1 2(3 P.O. BOX 3061 / A.M.F. / MIAMI, FLORIDA 33159 U.S. NATIONAL ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS REQUEST FOR CITY OF MIAMI FUNDS AND STAFF ASSISTANCE Based on the witnessed success of the 1981, 8th annual Miami International Regatta, the United States Rowing Association ( Row- ing's Governing Body in the U.S. ) has awarded Miami both the Junior National Championship and the Masters National Championship. RACK(;RniTNn Staging National Championships in Miami is the result of nine years of hard and well organized volunteer work by the Miami Rowing Club, complete support from the City of Miami and its staff, and un- selfish financial contribution by our community. With this support, the Miami International Regatta has become a fully recognized event where both South American and U.S. crews compete. This recognition has materialized in the awarding of the Champ- ionships that for the first time will be held outside the Northeast of the United States. The Championships themselves will be the prelude of what is ex- pected to become a classical summer Panamerican Regatta every year. DEFINITION OF THE EVENTS JUNIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The Junior National Championships will be conducted at the Miami Marine Stadium on -June 25, 26, and 27. Approximately 500 oarsmen from all over the U.S. are expected in addition to crews from Canada, Mexico, Argentina and Peru. A total of 20 events will be held, 11 championships, 9 non -championships in two mornings. MASTERS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The Masters National Championships will be conducted at the Miami Marine Stadium on September 11 and 12. BOX 3061 / A.M.F. / MIAMI, FLORIDA 33159 ( Continued From Page One ) The Miami Rowing Club plans to provide a superbly organized event with 150 volunteers participating. Besides the racing, M.R.C. intends to create a carnival atmosphere in the shoreline adding color to the races. DIRECT BENEFITS FROM THE EVENTS There are 500 oarsmen that will compete at the Junior Nationals and 300 at the Masters Nationals. Our experience has been that crews and families plan a vacation - around a Miami race and that a ratio of six total visitors per oars- man can be expected for a total of 4,800 visitors. They will stay an average of 4 nights, three to a room. They are expected to use 6,400 room nights and spend close to $1,000.00 in the local economy. In addition, the Regattas will be advertised in Rowing, U.S.A., in the Canadian and South American Rowing Magazines with a total dis- tribution of close to 300,000. Oarsmen home city newspapers will report the event throughout the U.S. and Channel 23 is considering doing a thirty minute program to be aired over the S.I.N. network. REQUEST FOR FUNDS AND ASSISTANCE The Miami Rowing Club has already obtained committments for private funds to cover one half the expenses of these events. Please see attached budget. However, in order to conduct the events in a proper manner, a total of $14,250.00 are requested from the City of Miami. In addition, we require assistance with cleaning the shoreline, course set-up, stands at the finish line, etc... Assistance from the City of Miami staff would be welcome and appreciated. - 82-386 P. 0.
