This letter is to confirm our invitation to you to be co-chairman and an honored guest at our activities September 12, 1982. What we are planning is nothing less than a five-year project to revitalize the Miami River and the riverfront areas. An attached statement of purpose explains our goals. Our first major project, the September 12 boat parade and related events, is designed to attract public awareness to the many assets the Miami River provides this community. The major events will include a boat parade of dozens of boats, from freighters to canoes, up the river; a canoe race; a tugboat pulling demonstration; a demonstration of the potential uses of a water taxi; a visit to the ruins of an Indian village; and the beginning of our clean-up efforts. We would like for you to join us for the start of the boat parade, at the new Hyatt Hotel/Knight Conference Center. This proud new complex symbolizes both the establishment of Miami as an international commerce center and the rebirth of the Miami River. more... 3464 Main Highway/Coconut Grove, Florida 33133/Telephone (305) 445-1495 Mayor Maurice Ferre August 18, 1982 Page 2 The boat parade will start at the Hyatt at 12:30. As Miami grew from a small settlement to a giant metropolis, the Miami River also flourished as a great commercial and recreational asset to the city. But Miamians have forgotten their city's origins along the river's banks. Much of the river's tremendous potential goes unrecognized. With progress and prosperity, there also are problems. To re-establish the Miami River. as the "city's lifeline," we have formed the Miami River Revival Committee, a group composed of marine industry interests, environmentalists, developers, businessmen and professionals, the academic community, and civic and political leaders. Our goals are twofold. First, we want to begin a series of projects, extending over a five-year period, to revitalize the river and its environs. Second, we want to draw the public's attention to the — i river and to the many beneficial uses it has for the community. We have five specific areas of endeavor, which are: 1. Beautification. The river should be a gem in the setting of a great city. We intend to clean up the river, eliminating the derelict boats and unsightly areas along the riverfront. We will work through appropriate agencies and private groups to enhance the environmental and ascetic qualities of .the river. 2. -Recreation. The river should be a for the citizens of this community. encourage the recreational uses of parks along the river's banks. The development has a high priority in more... place of enjoyment we will the river and of riverwalk this regard. 82-814 3464 Main Highway/Coconut Grove, Florida 33133/Telephone (305) 4451495 A CELEBRATION OF THE MIAMI RIVER PAGE 2 3. Commercial. The marine industry -- manufacturers, boatyards, shipping, marine supplies, retailers -- is a vital part of this area's economy. The commercial use of the river adds to its romantic appeal and to its beauty. We will encourage measures which support the marine industry, and make it harmonious with other uses of the river. 4. Historic. Ancient Indian viallages and the original Miami settlement were along the banks of the river. We want to remind Miami of its heritage through projects that restore ancient landmarks or mark historic sites. 5. Transportation. The Miami River offers an untapped source of transportation alternatives. As this city grows, we envision many innovative uses of the river to transport passengers to various points in the downtown area, and from downtown to the airport vicinity. To further these goals, we will establish ourselves as a not -for -profit corporation. The Miami River Revival Committee is not a part of any other organization, but seeks to incorporate into its membership all groups and individuals with an interest in revitalizing the Miami River.
