Box 330708 Miami, Florida 33133 Gentlemen: This letter is our application to the City of Miami for support of the 1983 Orange Bowl Marathon. As representative of the organizers, I am grateful for the opportunity to appear before you at the commission meeting on October 14, 1982, and trust that the following paragraphs will serve as useful information, preparatory to that meeting. I. On January 22, 1983, the sixth Orange Bowl Marathon will be run. During the five years since its inception, the marathon has helped project a positive image of Miami all around the world. In 1982 runners came from 23 countries and 39 states to take part in the event. II. In 1982,the marathon was expanded to a ten day festival which included a se,:ond race (10K Race of the Americas), film festival, runners clinics, and various other events. This concept was designed as a tourist attraction and has been highly effective. A.similar format is planned for 1983 with the inclusion of a running and fitness exposition. Already we understand that tours are being organized from Britain, West Germany, Venezuela, and possibly other Latin American countries. III. In 1982, the Race of the Americas 10K was won by Alberto Salazar in an American record time. The race provided a resounding start to the festival with an estimated 15,000 cheering spectators in attendance and perhaps the finest field of runners at any race in the U.S.A. this year. As a result of this, the 1983 race will be televised to at least 70 markets across the country by one of the cable networks (USA, ESPN and/or Public Broadcasting,; Service). IV. In 1982, the program attracted about 4,000 participants and both races were witnessed by many thousands of spectators. The marathon 'RODUCER OF THE ORANGE BOWL MARATHON / THE RACE OF THE AMERICAS 10 KILOMETERS 1-22-1983 1-15-1983 and City Commission Page 2 o{ 1 October , L32 Mayor Maurice Ferre was featured in a story, entitled "The Miami Running Scene", published in Runners World Magazine, the largest journal of its kind in the world, with a claimed readership of over a million, and international circulation which includes North America, Europe, and Australia. In addition, the marathon was televised live to about five -million homes in Venezuela by a television crew sent specifically for that purpose. We believe that the whole Orange Bowl Running Series constitutes a valuable and dynamic promotional vehicle for Miami and South Florida. V. The budget for the 1983 Series i•s between $250,000 and $300,000. A substantial portion of that is spent on promotions, such as: - Bringing in international champion athletes, who are celebrities in their own respective countries. These athletes carry the message of Miami back to their home communities, thus, fostering a clean, vibrant and exciting image for our city. Extensive advertising through national journals in the United States and Canada, with specific targets in the Northeast (major cities such as, New York, Boston, Montreal, Chicago, etc.) and the South. - Distribution of 20,000 full color brochures (including entry forms) announcing the 1983 Orange Bowl Running Series to runners all over the country and overseas. - Special visitors packets, with maps of the area and hotel listings, etc., to be distributed to applicants from.outside South Florida area. In previous years we have enjoyed assistance from the Police and servicd from the Public Works Department of the Division of Transportation. The latter included painting the orange line along the marathon route, the preparation and erection of marathon mile marker signs, and the provision of equipment, such as, barricades and "showmobile" at both races. This year we have been advised that police assistance together with the rental of the Orange Bowl Stadium will total about $7000, for the 1983 Running Series. We request assistance and support from the City of Miami in the following three ways: 1. That the City views the Orange Bowl Marathon and the whole Orange Bowl Running Series as a contract for promotional services with a contract fee of about $10,000. 2. That a grant be made to offset the fees to be charged for police services and Orange Bowl Stadium rental. :--901 Page 3 of 3 , October 7, 1982 Mayor Maurice Ferre and City Commission 3. That the various appropriate departments (Traffic, Parks, Works) of the City and County be encouraged to provide services as des- cribed above. The above paragraphs outline our proposal to you. They describe our needs accurately, but we would be grateful for whatever assistance the City may be able to offer. The impact of successful road races has been appreciated by many cities. Most of the European capitals contribute tremendous support to make their marathons substantial international attractions. Recently several American cities (Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco, for example) have sensed a need to promote their own marathons to gain some of the prestige and publicity that a major race can generate. Thank you for your kind assistance. Sincerely, RUNNERS INTERNATIONAL, INC. Producers of Orange Bowl Running Series Basil Honikman, President EH/blp Enclosure ti t
