Gary City Manager CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA INTER -OFFICE tMEMORANDUM -ZATE September 29, 1982 FILE F,. Dena Spillman, Director Community Development sueEC' Miami Design Plaza Beautification - Woodson Park , L F E, F• ES AO-rUF?ES It is recommended that the City Commission authorize the transfer of $25,000 from 8th Year Community Development Block Grant Funds, originally allocated to the Edison - Buena Vista Economic Development Project, for the beautification of the Miami Design Plaza, through the development of Woodson Park, located at N.E. 2nd Avenue & 36th Street. Woodson Park, located at N.E. 2nd Avenue & 36th Street at the gateway to the Miami Design Plaza, is presently a .04 acre undeveloped parcel of land ourned by the City. Due to its strategic location at the en- trance to the Miami Design Plaza, its development will play an im- portant part in both the private and public efforts underway to foster the physical and economic expansion of the area. The City of Miami is undertaking a comprehensive program to improve the physical environment of the area which will entail signage, parking and street improvements. Funding has already been provided to under- take a feasibility study for a parking structure, design of new signage, street improvements and financially assisting in the promotion of Market Week 82. Development of Woodson Park will be done with City forces and will entail a plaza with space provided for the placement of a dramatic sculpture. The local merchants association will be responsible for placing such sculpture in the park. It is anticipated that this project will be completed by November 12, 1982, in time for Market Week 82, which will draw 6,000-8,000 interior designers from throughout the United States to Miami as a major international center for interior design. The Edison -Buena Vista Community -Based Organization has not chosen to renew its contract with the City and funding originally allocated for economic development services within the area could most beneficially be utilized for physical improvement projects which support commercial redevelopment. /cr
