A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING MIAMI-DADE
COUNTY TO CO -DESIGNATE NORTHWEST 2ND AVENUE FROM
NORTHWEST 8TH STREET TO NORTHWEST 11 TH STREET AS ALICE DAY
WAY; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS
RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS LISTED.

WHEREAS, Alice Day, born on March 9, 1946, in Alachua County, Florida, was the
second of seven children and raised in Miami, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Alice Day has been recognized as "South Florida's First Lady of Jazz," a
title that pays tribute to her immense impact on the local jazz scene and her lasting legacy in the
Miami region; and
WHEREAS, Alice Day displayed her extraordinary talent and passion for jazz at a young
age, captivating audiences with her exceptional vocal stylings; and
WHEREAS, Alice Day's deep connection to the music of Billie Holiday, particularly
through her rendition of "God Bless the Child," served as her inspiration and led her to become
a self-taught jazz singer, emulating Holiday's every inflection and sound; and
WHEREAS, Alice Day's musical prowess and dedication to jazz were recognized and
celebrated throughout her career, earning her the title of Best Female Jazz Vocalist at the South
Florida Music Awards in 1984; and
WHEREAS, Alice Day's contributions to the local jazz scene extended beyond her
remarkable performances, as she established her own jazz venue, Alice's Place, within Fort
Lauderdale's former Musicians Exchange in 1989, ensuring the preservation and promotion of
this cherished musical genre; and
WHEREAS, Alice Day's passion for jazz and her commitment to keeping the music alive
made her an influential figure and mentor to many aspiring jazz artists, fostering their talents
and supporting them during times of adversity; and
WHEREAS, Alice Day's untimely passing on July 10, 2020, at the age of 74, was a great
loss to the jazz community and the cultural fabric of South Florida; and
WHEREAS, her memory and contributions deserve to be honored and celebrated; and
WHEREAS, the designation of Northwest 2 Avenue from Northwest 8 Street to
Northwest 11 Street as "Alice Day Way" would serve as a lasting tribute to this iconic jazz artist,
ensuring that her legacy and musical contributions are forever ingrained in the city's history; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the City of Miami to express its deepest
appreciation for Alice Day's extraordinary contributions to the arts and cultural heritage of the
City;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble of this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby urges Miami -Dade County to co -designate
Northwest 2nd Avenue from Northwest 81" Street to Northwest 11 t" Street as Alice Day Way.
Section 3. The City Commission directs the City Clerk to transmit a certified copy of this
Resolution to the Mayor of Miami -Dade County and the members of the Miami -Dade County
Board of County Commissioners.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
