Box 370416, Miami, Florida 33137 (305) 576-2278 REQUEST BEFORE THE CITY OF MIAMI COMMISSION DECEMBER 9, 1982 BEAUTIFICATION The Design Plaza Association requests that the City of Miami initiate as soon as possible perhaps early next year, the Street Improvement and Beautification Program ( project #0029) for the Miami Design Plaza which has been designated in the approved Miami Capital Improvement Program 1982-1988. Five hundred thousand dollars has been allocated in the Capital Improvement Program for utilization of highway bond funds. According to the Capital Improvement Program this project is scheduled for implementation during 1983-4. The project involves beautification of the Miami Design Plaza, including street improvement, landscaping and sidewalk improvement in the Plaza area bounded by I-95, N.E. 42nd Street, N. Miami Avenue and the FEC Railroad. This program will complement the joint public -private projects that are underway to establish the Miami Design Plaza as a national and international center for the Design Industry. K. L The Merchants Association has funded a study by the University of Florida's School of Landscape Architecture which _ we have provided to the City to use as a general guide to prepare the Street Improvement and Beautification Program for the District. The Design Plaza is truly a unique area in Miami --a commercially oriented district with an anticipated major growth in the 1980's. Because it is an area in which the traffic is largely pedestrian, the streetscapes are of particular importance. Any improvement of the landscape will reinforce the image of Miami the city is fostering. The Design Plaza Association Wishes to thank the ' City for the assistance you have provided and the efforts you may have made on behalf of our first Market Week lastJerry Cody month. The planting of trees, the clean-up, the President creation of Woodson Park and the Assistance in Nancy Felber Publicizing the event worldwide enhanced our success Vice President immeasurably. Elena Whitaker Secretary Bill Smith Corresponding Secretary r~ AL Gordon Williams Treasurer k, Miami Design Plaza Merchants' Association P.O. Box 370416, Miami, Florida 33137 (305) 576.2278 ki We again request implementation of the Street Improvement and Beautification Program as soon as possible in the time fram 1983-4. TRADE MART The City of Miami's most important direction is to make Miami one of the foremost trade and commerce centers in the United States. The City of Miami has assessed that the Design Plaza is one of the centers of trade and commerce. The Plaza has one of the best outlooks for potential growth of any commercial area in the City and employs now 4-5,000 people. In light of these facts, we wish to make another request of the City. Harket Week proved that the Design Plaza has a strong future as a significant national and international Design center and this strength may imply the need for a Trade Mart within the district. To assess whether the Design Plaza would benefit from the building of a Trade Mart, we wish to ask the City of Miami to approve financing of a feasibility study to be carried out as soon as possible. It is of some urgency to do this study now since the momentum for the Plaza has been established by Market Week and other cities, like Fort Lauderdale, are developing Design Centers, to compete with Miami's district. Our district's size and history make it the best candidate to remain the trade crossroads for design among North and South Americas and Europe. A Trade Mart might be the enhancement that would reinforce Miami's standing decisively and clearly and keep the district competitive regionally. We urge you to approve such a study of the need of a Trade Mart and to finance such a study. Jerry Cody President Thank you for the opportunity for this hearing Nancy Felber on these two important issues.
