It is recommended that $12,500 from the Citywide
Contingency Fund be allocated to the Dade County
Chapter of the American Red Cross in support of
the Emergency Food Distribution Program contingent
upon approved funding by Metropolitan Dade County
in the amount of $30,000 and the United Way of
Dade County in the amount of $12,500, as per the
attached resolution.
The Dade County Chapter of the American Red Cross has requested funding
from the City of Miami in the amount of $12,500 in support of the Emer-
gency Food Distribution Program. In addition, the local chapter has
requested assistance from Metropolitan Dade County for a base grant of
$30,000 and $12,500 from the United Way of Dade County.
This program, which has operated for three months at no cost to the
community, has served some 120,000 needed families food valued at over
1.2 million dollars provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Red Cross must now return its staff to regular duties for hurricane
preparedness and relief; thus the need for the $55,000 funding (as
described on the attached budget sheet) which will continue the program
through December 31, 1983, serving some 200,000 families 2.5 million
dollars of food. Seven of the fourteen distribution sites are located
within the City of Miami.
It is, therefore, the recommendation of the Recreation Department that
said allocation of $12,500 be approved contingent upon approved funding
by Metropolitan Dade County ($30,000) and the United Way of Dade County
($12,500) via the attached resolution.
