HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-83-0158J-83-130 0 RESOLUTION No. 8'-158 A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ALLOCATION OF $12,500 FROM THE CITYWIDE CONTINGENT FUND TO THE DADE COUNTY CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS FOR FINANCIAL ASSIST- AI4CE IN SUPPORT OF THE EMERGENCY FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM CONTINGENT UPON APPROVED FUNDING BY METROPOLITAN DADE COUNTY IN TIIE AMOUNT OF $30, 000 AND THE UNITED WAY OF DADE COUNTY IN THE AMOUNT OF $12,500. WHEREAS, the Dade County Chapter of the American Red Cross has requested $12,500 in support of the Emergency Food Distribution Program; and WHEREAS, said program will provide assistance to at least 200,000 families with some 2.5 million dollars worth of food, countywide; and WHEREAS, seven of the fourteen distribution sites are located within the City of Miami; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COI -(MISSION OF THE, CITY OF MIAIII, FLORIDA: Section 1. The allocation of $12,500 from the Citywide Con- tingency Fund to the Dade County Chapter of the American Red Cross in support of the Emergency Food Distribution Program is hereby authorized contingent upon approved funding by Metropolitan Dade County in the amount of $30,000 and the United Way of Dade County in the amount of $12,500. Proposed Resolution - - Funding for Emergency Food Distribution Program CUe4 41JY� -__erector �j7 �- - Department of Recreation - aES 2 It is recommended that $12,500 from the Citywide Contingency Fund be allocated to the Dade County Chapter of the American Red Cross in support of the Emergency Food Distribution Program contingent upon approved funding by Metropolitan Dade County in the amount of $30,000 and the United Way of Dade County in the amount of $12,500, as per the attached resolution. The Dade County Chapter of the American Red Cross has requested funding from the City of Miami in the amount of $12,500 in support of the Emer- gency Food Distribution Program. In addition, the local chapter has requested assistance from Metropolitan Dade County for a base grant of $30,000 and $12,500 from the United Way of Dade County. This program, which has operated for three months at no cost to the community, has served some 120,000 needed families food valued at over 1.2 million dollars provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Red Cross must now return its staff to regular duties for hurricane preparedness and relief; thus the need for the $55,000 funding (as described on the attached budget sheet) which will continue the program through December 31, 1983, serving some 200,000 families 2.5 million dollars of food. Seven of the fourteen distribution sites are located within the City of Miami. It is, therefore, the recommendation of the Recreation Department that said allocation of $12,500 be approved contingent upon approved funding by Metropolitan Dade County ($30,000) and the United Way of Dade County ($12,500) via the attached resolution. The food distribution is handled by the Red Cross and Dade County has already allocated $30,000 for this purpose, and the Red Cross has allocated $12,500.
