HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-83-017910 J-83-223 rr t 1; # RESOLUTION NO. �'`3-1 �) A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AND INSTRUCTING THE CITY MANAGER TO ESTABLISH A PROGRAM TO BE KNOWN AS THE "SCHOOL CROSSING AUXILIARY GUARD PROGRAM" WHICH SHALL BE CONDUCTED BY THE MIAMI POLICE DEPARTMENT (MPD) AND SHALL BE COMPOSED OF UNPAID VOLUNTEERS TRAINED BY THE MPD AND SUPPLIED WITH EQUIPMENT BY THE CITY; FURTHER INSTRUCTING THE CITY MANAGER TO REPORT BACK TO THE COMMISSION WITHIN 30 DAYS ON HIS EFFORTS IN IMPLEMENTING THIS PROGRAM. WHERES, there have been numerous instances of young children being seriously injured or killed by a speeding motor vehicle while crossing City streets on their way to and from school; and WHEREAS, it appears that there are insufficient crossing safeguards to protect the lives of the children attending public and private schools in the City; and WHEREAS, there appear to be scores of civic -minded persons willing to volunteer and cooperate in a program to remedy this intolerable and dangerous situation; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The City Manager is hereby authorized and instructed to establish a program to be known as the "School Crossing Auxiliary Guard Program" which shall be conducted by the Miami Police Department (MPD). Section 2. The herein Program shall be composed of unpaid volunteers supplied with equipment by the City of Miami and trained by the MPD to assist school children crossing streets in the City of Miami. Section 3. The City Manager is hereby instructed to report back to the City Commission within 30 days on his efforts implementing this Program.
