To Howard V. Gary A-E March 25, 1983
City Manager
Proposed Resolution - Summer
Food Service Program Grant
Alber tr Howard, Director
Department of Recreation
It is recommended that the City Manager be
authorized to accept a grant award in the
amount of $133,532 from the U. S. Depart-
ment of Agriculture for a Summer Food
Service Program, and execute the necessary_
contract as per the attached Resolution.
The Summer Food Service Program, commonly referred to as the Summer
Lunch Program, began in the City of Miami in 1968 and has grown into
a County -wide program which served 442,000 nourishing lunches during
the summer of 1982 to children aged 18 and under.
Grant funding is provided by the U. S. Department of Agriculture,
administered by the Florida Department of Education, Food and Nutri-
tion Services; $1.515 per lunch includes 11 cents for administrative
costs (monitors' salaries, mileages and clerical); approximately
$1.25 per lunch and 15.5 cents for operational costs (site personnel).
Food solicitation will be a part of an umbrella bid processed by
Metropolitan Dade County.
This year's program proposes an increase of sites from 13 to 24,
1,300 to approximately 2,300 daily lunches, and total funding from
$84,410 to $133,532.
The Lunch Program has been highly successful for many years, pre-
dominately serving the disadvantaged youth of the City who otherwise
might go without a balanced lunch time meal. The lunches also
enhance the recreation program in that children are not leaving for
lunch and parents are assured of their well-being. This program
also provides for additional employment opportunities (monitors and
site personnel).
Therefore, it is the recommendation of the Department of Recreation
that the City Manager be authorized to accept this grant and execute
the necessary contract for its implementation as per the attached
resolution.
