A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE 5TH ANNUAL COCONUT GROVE
BED RACE, WHICH IS TO BE HELD MAY 22, 1982, COSPON-
SORED BY THE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION AND THE
CITY OF MIAMI DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION; CLOSING CER-
TAIN STREETS TO THROUGH TRAFFIC ON THAT DATE DURING
SPECIFIC HOURS AND ESTABLISHING A PEDESTRIAN MALL
SUBJECT TO ISSUANCE OF PERMITS BY THE POLICE AND
FIRE DEPARTMENTS; FURTHER AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER
TO EXECUTE A SUPPORT AGREEMENT SETTING FORTH THE CON-
DITIONS UNDER WHICH THE CITY WILL PROVIDE SERVICE AS-
SISTANCE.
WHEREAS, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, a nonprofit corpora-
tion under the laws of the State of Florida, has requested assistance
from the City of Miami in connection with the 5th Annual Coconut Grove
Bed Race to be held on McFarlane Road from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on
May 22, 1983; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Department of Recreation has co -sponsor-
ed this event in 1979, 1980, 1981, and 1982;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. In order to establish a temporary pedestrian mall on
May 22, 1983 from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. for the 5th Annual Coconut
Grove Bed Race, co -sponsored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association and
the City of Miami, Department of Recreation, the following streets are
hereby closed to through traffic, subject to the issuance of permits by
the Police and Fire Departments:
(a) McFarlane Road from Main Highway to S.W. 27 Avenue;
(b) All streets and avenues intersecting the area listed in
subsection (a) hereof.
Section 2. The City Manager is hereby authorized to execute a sup-
port agreement setting forth the conditions under which the City will pro-
vide service assistance.

Authorizing the Closing of
Streets for the Muscular
Dystrophy Bed Race.

IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE CITY COMMISSION
ADOPT A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY
MANAGER TO CLOSE CERTAIN STREETS TO THROUGH
TRAFFIC ON MAY 22, 1983 FROM 8:00 A.M. TO
3:00 P.M. FOR THE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY BED
RACE; AND FURTHER AUTHORIZING THE CITY
MANAGER TO EXECUTE A SUPPORT AGREEMENT SET-
TING FORTH THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE
CITY WILL PROVIDE SERVICE ASSISTANCE, AS
PER ATTACHED RESOLUTION.
The City of Miami, Department of Recreation has co -sponsored
this event in 1979, 1980, 1981, and 1982. A temporary pedes-
trian mall will be established by closing said streets being
subject to the issuance of permits by the Police and Fire
Departments.
McFarlane Road from Main Highway to S.W. 27th Avenue, and all
streets and avenues intersecting the areas listed will be
closed.
Last year (1982) the Fourth Annual Coconut Grove Bed Race pro-
vided a wholesome recreational activity for an estimated 15,000
people while assisting in raising twenty thousand dollars
($20,000) to fight Muscular Dystrophy.
We believe that the Bed Race is a worthwile cause for the com-
munity and its' people.

Audience Expected: This is the fifth (5th) year of the Coconut Grove
Bed Race for Muscular Dystrophy. Last year (1982) this event provided
a wholesome family activity for an estimated 15,000 people and raised
approximately twenty thousand dollars ($20,000.00) to fight Muscular
Dystrophy. We anticipate that there will be 20,000 individuals in at-
tendance this year.
It is the recommendation of the Department of Recreation that this
Resolution be accepted.
