FLORIOA INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM DATE March 29, 1983 FILE SUB-)L,:- "Miami's For Recreation" Summer Program '83 "Partners For Youth" REFERENCLS ENCLOSURES The Recreation Department has planned a supplemental summer program of special activities that will be geared to youth, adults and the entire family unit throughout the twelve (12) weeks of Summer 183. Our program will be one of enormous diversity and will serve as the counterpart to Partners for Youth. We are calling this program "Miami's for Recreation". During the 1982 summer the City allocated $30,000 to the Recreation Department to sponsor summer discos and fishing trips for inner City youth. These programs attracted over 70,000 youths and proved very successful. This year we want to enlarge this program to reach out and involve the entire community. New programs will be added such as field trips to the new Zoo, Castle Park, and other points of interest. Karate and tennis will be expanded and roving instructors will visit the inner City parks. Summer theatre will be touring City wide as well as the Children's Dance and special puppet and magic shows will be included in the roving recreation program. Another innovation will be a disc jockey training program where we will offer a ten week course at Miami Dade North to train twenty- five youths in audio operation, City and County ordinances and, hopefully, graduate licensed disc jockeys. These and other special activities will be one part of "Miami's for Recreation". Regular activities for youth and adults will be an on -going program. These daily programs will include baseball and tennis camps, coed sport activities, playground competitions, arts and crafts, summer lunch program, social and cultural activities, and the popular summer Olympics program. "Miami's for Recreation" can be a total community program. With so many diversified activities there will be something for everyone. It is a sound estimate that over 156,160 residents will participate in this program. The total cost will be $176,523 for a per capita cost of only $1.13. ,D/SCUS510/v 93 - #4'60- z Howard V.
