TO Howard V. Gary
City Manager
CITY OF MIAMI. FLORIDA
INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM
FROM: ?b,/Howar ,irector
Department of Recreation
y^1
C0.'`VISSION ACTION
DATE April 15, 1983
SUBJECT. 1983 Little League
World Series
REFERENCES.
ENCLOSURES!
The City of Miami Youth Baseball Academies, Inc. has received
a $10,000 grant from the City of Miami in support of the 1983
Little League World Series to be conducted on August 15 -22.
This was approved on April 6, 1983 via Motion 83-293. The
League received the same amount for the 1982 World Series.
However, representatives from the Youth League have requested
that 1983 funding be increased to $20,000.
In review, I have determined this to be an excellent program;
one which has brought international attention to the City
of Miami. However, I feel the City's contribution should be
sufficient when considering other resources and budgetary
requirements and since the organization is attempting to
secure outside sources, the City should not be expected to
increase their funding.
The Youth Baseball League has been asked to continue their
efforts in soliciting private funds as well as eliminating
unnecessary frills. Additionally, in -kind support will be
provided by the Recreation Department and the City will fully
cooperate in making this baseball series a community success.

Type of Event: Second Annual City of Miami Youth Baseball World Series
Sites: City of Miami Stadium
Dates: August 15 through 22, 1983 daily, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Cash Match: - 0 -
Audience Expected: 10,000
The first series (1982) was composed of five teams. They were from Japan,
Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Miami.
This year already nine teams have accepted to attend this event: Taiwan,
Korea, Japan, Mexico, Venezuela, Curagao, Aruba, Spain, and Miami
During these eight days the boys spend here in Miami, The City of Miami
Youth Baseball Academies takes care of all expenses. This means hotel,
food, field trips, and transportation to and from the games every day.
This is a most successful event worthy of support by the City.
Although the number of participating teams increased from last year's
five to nine for this year, the line item budget presented is superfluous
and vague (banquets, miscellaneous) and therefore could stand some effec-
tive revisions to become cost effective.
Therefore, this department recommends the amount of S10,000 to be the
City's cash sponsorship for the Miami Youth Baseball World Series.
